I noticed something interesting today. The Tornado cannot be lengthened but it can be shortened. The Rampage can be both shortened & lengthened.

Now visually these plans appear very simular with I think the major difference is that the Rampage is a "V" bottom design while the Tornado is a flat bottom design. Now both boats have 6 frames with the overall length of the Tornado being 18'-6" while the overall length of the Rampage is 18'. Just wondering if anyone knows why or can speculate why one can be lengthened while the other cannot be? Could it have something to do with the differences in bottom design?

ok...maybe this will help get the ball rolling and get some prespectives on this besides my own. I was thinking that possibly why the "V" bottom Rampage can be lengthened while the flat bottom Tornado cannot is that the the V bottom design offers a structural stiffness not found in the flat bottom design so the frames can be spaced farther apart and still maintain its strength? I duuno just totally specualting here :?:

I asked Glen about this one. He said that there really wasn't any reason why both couldn't be extended 10%; they should stay fair.
But "they put so much HP on the Tornado... I would like to see more structure if they lengthen it".

With a stock motor, lengthening probably wouldn't be a problem. This prohibition was arbitrary and has more to do with "potential" power. The Tornado will be the faster of the two, but will also pound more.

When these boats were designed, it was all about "sleekness" and speed. The flat-bootm was king. The Rampage was really designed to accommodate a jet, which prefer a vee-bottom. It does give a better ride, but the vee-bottom has more drag.

Thank you very much Barry. :D I have a few ideas I would like to possibly incorporate on the Tornado and an little extra length would make things much easier....one change I might tackle is to change the angle of the shaft. If I change the angle of the shaft to 8-9 degrees (instead of 10-12 degrees as the plans states) the Vdrive will end up being roughly where the middle front seat is. I would like it to be farther back in the boat if at all possible. so the extra length would be handy for that. What extra structure would you think might be required? Heavier frames, heavier chine and sheers, more or heavier battens, something else?

Again thanks for the response. :)

Increase batten thickness to 5/4 and add an additional batten on each side. That should be all.
