hello all;

I know I've mentioned my ideas on this in other spots, but since we now have this section specifically for mods, I wanted to repost and get some feedback.

First of all, I want to say that I do love the Amigo design, but it is too small for my needs, otherwise I would have gone with that for the cruising and the gaff rig aspects totally!

I chose the James Cook for it's sweet lines, size, and traditional feel of her for me. I am a big fan of the Gaff rig setup (as if you couldn't tell LOL) and from looking at the study plans for the Amigo and much reading online and in books I have come up with the inital setup I think (and hope) will work on the "JC".

1/ In order to keep the overall COE forward I've moved the mast forward about 18". This puts the mast support in the cabin just at the settee edge (along with the bracing under the sole as well) . Currently the NEW COE is at max 12" aft of the orig COE. I am not sure how much weather helm this will add but I imagine there will be more overall simply due to the nature of the sail plan.

2/ I am hoping to keep it stepped up on top of the cabin roof with about a 2' tall brace that bolts through the mast in 2 locations, on both sides of it. and pin rail around 3 sides.

3/ in order to do this and keep the hatch and jib traveller I've had to extend the cabin structure 18" forward as well - now ending at frame location #7 instead of mid-way between two frames.

4/ in order not to reduce the size of the main too much, it's meant that currently I've needed to extend the bowsprit about 18-24". I realize that the called out 3'x3' sprit will need to be increased to I am hoping 4x4 NET to make up for strength.

5/I am thinking of adding some floatation forward just under the anchor locker at the bow to help offset some fo the forward weight shift from the mast and longer sprit

6/ Will be shifting to using running back stays port and strbd.

7/ regarding the shrouds.. this is the current section I am tackling... I've seen designs where, there is only one set of stays from the hounds just above the max height of the gaff. I've seen designs where these stays are directly outboard from the mast, and also where they are slightly aft of the mast...


is this simply a choice of the designer? If I can use the aft angling shrouds, then I SHOULD be able to use the old location for the chainplates... if they need to be as forward as the mast, then I will have to install a 1/2 frame each side to make sure there is enough structure to attach too. I am also hoping to have the chainplates outward on the hull, not inboard close to the cabin structure

alrighty, I know I've rambled on here. Does anyone see any obvious problems? flaws? worries? or out-right-foolishness?

Thanks dale! always nice to get a pat on the back! ... it's taken me 2 yrs to get this far and I'm soon to start cutting some actual wood! I think I've prob spent a good 10hrs a week (avg) in my chair just thinking.. planning.. drafting.. and LOTS of erasing!

I don't know EVERYTHING too, but I can tell, YOU, are enjoying the beginning stages and will build a great James Cook.
