Barrelback 20'

Postby alycat » Wed Dec 18, 2013 4:01 pm

Finally figured out how to post pictures. I have been building since Sept and have almost got a shape of a boat. I had my first major upset this past weekend with the transom, so I am going to rebuild it, due to the bevel got me out of sorts. I think what I need to do is not try to cut the bevel, but cut it straight and sand to the bevel, about a 1/4 inch over the plans mark I think will do it. Merry Christmas to all!!! I hope everyone gets all the boatbuilding tools they need from Santa this year!! :D :D

Obviously my picture posting skills are lacking!!!
I'll have to figure that out. I do have a link to the facebook barrelback build album below, I think that works.

Will

I don't try to cut the bevel. I sand it.

Looking good Will!!

I just cut the notches for my Chine, and it really kicked my butt. Roberta and Bill posted techniques on a couple threads that helped me, but still had a few issues that more chine layers and epoxy can fix!!

Has anyone had to stream bend their shears on the barrelback. I have a 5/8ths thick by 1 1/8 shear that is suppose to have two to three layers. Currently it is not going to bent that much without breaking. Also, I precut the notches for the shear when I built the frames, so I am asumming I need to bevel those notches like I did with the chine to get a good contacting fit. Thanks in advance for the advice.

I'm at the very same step in my build and would really like to hear from the seasoned boatbuilders on this problem.

Will

Wrap the sheers in towels at the bend. Then pour boiling water on the towels. Do this 2 or 3 times. Don't let them cool in between. Strip the towels quickly and make the bend. You won't have to hold it long. When the wood cools it will have taken much of the bend. You may have to do this a couple of times. Take them off and let everything dry before glue up.

Yes, you have to cut the notches to match the angle of the sheers, battens, chine.
Cut so that the shallowest part of the notch is even with the sheer or batten. In other words. the frame will be even with the sheer ( or chine, batten ) at the widest point and will cut across the edge of the frame as it bends around. Then this edge of the frame that protrudes will be faired off when you fair .
Take a close look at pictures of fairing and you should see how this will work
