Re: Flying Saucer Build
What size is the motor?
Re: Flying Saucer Build
Its 25 HP. Heavy at 180 lbs. The transom carried it well, especially with the transom saver on. I could detect no flex in the transom with the transom saver on while hauling, nice and solid. However without the transom saver the transom could be flexed if you bounced the engine. This much weight will require a motor well to help reinforce the transom. I was happy with the engine install. Now back to work.vupilot wrote:What size is the motor?

Looks great project is progressing well. I would get the motor well built before setting the motor I'm sure that's you plan. Great job so far.

Re: Flying Saucer Build
My seats are as low as I can get them. I want a short windshield with a hard top so they must be as low as possible. The supports run on top of the battens and slant aft from station 4, so the seating is lower than the top of frame 4. The seat backs will be slanted back as well. The hard top will have a hatch in the center so you can lift it and step in between the two seats to sit down. It will actually seat three across, but the center seat back will be removable for easy entry and I'll rarely have three across so the seat back will be stored.
I'll have no cross beam to support the seat backs so I'll have to rig some kind of supports for the seat backs. The center seat back will slide onto the side seat backs and get its support from them. I don't want to have to step over to get seated. Getting in will be hard enough with the hard top.

Some progress. Cedar decking on the bow and the side decks are ready to install.

Thanks Gene. My Merc dealer ordered the steering for me. It is Teleflex, it says Safe T.geneanthes wrote:Is that teleflex steering? Which kit did you get?

I like what you did with the seat base. It looks like you are sitting in the boat
rather than on it.
rather than on it.
Re: Flying Saucer Build
Finished installing the gunwales and have started on the windshield.
Re: Flying Saucer Build
Windshield is a little large compared to traditional Saucers, but you are completely protected behind it. I have decided not to put a hard top on it. Getting in would be difficult and it would have to be a little higher than it is now and would look a bit odd. And I am ready to finish up this project and get it on the water. Rounding the corners of the window frames will make it look a little better.
Re: Flying Saucer Build
Well it is nearly done. I have to paint the interior and run wiring and lights and finish the seating and install the glass which will be installed with the dark Mahogany around the windows. I took a week off for water skiing and a trip to Canaan valley. The boat will have taken about 9 weeks from the time I received the plans to the finished boat. All of scrap wood.
Re: Flying Saucer Build
Window trim and interior paint and she is finished. Next weekend, sea trials. Yea!
Re: Flying Saucer Build
Pretty amazing that you built this in the amount of time you did, it looks great! I'd love to see some video of it with that new 25 pushing it along when you take it out.
