Re: modified malahini
The rope has really worked out. I have been able to pull the staples with not problems. I have found the staple come out intact. I only had one where one leg stayed in the wood. I just have to remember to take staples out of rope. I keep grabbing them and puncturing my hands.

Re: modified malahini
Been making slow progress on spiling mahogany veneer. Have 4 rows finished (almost - have last board ready to epoxy in place) on starboard side. Port side is started 1 row done and 2 boards ready for epoxy.

Keep plugging away Bryan. Eventually you'll get there. It's looking great. Nice work on the spiling.

Thanks Carl and Joshua. I have a question on staining. As you can see, some of the boards are significantly lighter than others. When I apply the stain will this even out or will the lighter boards still be very noticeable? Should I try to stain the lighter boards with a darker stain first before applying the color I want?

Re: modified malahini
I had several boards that were significantly different. I stained with a Chris craft red mahogany and everything turned out pretty close.

Re: modified malahini
I can't answer this with knowledge gained from years of experience, but I had a significant difference in tone between different areas on my transom (you can see it in several of the earlier photos). After staining the tonal differences almost completely disappeared. I did test two shades on scrap prior to doing this and they also appeared to be the same afterwards. Best to test first.DrBryanJ wrote: I have a question on staining. As you can see, some of the boards are significantly lighter than others. Re: modified malahini
I've finished the starboard side planking and have about half of the port done. While waiting for the epoxy to cure on the port side, I started sanding the starboard with a belt sander and 80 grit belt. In the photos you can see some shallow tear out from the belt.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? What can I use to even the planks beside a belt sander?
Will they show when I stain the wood? What is the best way to remove these marks? I've tried long boarding, but seems to make little or no progress. I have ordered a cabinet scraper and have a card scraper. The card scraper seems to be working. Does anyone have any other suggestions? What can I use to even the planks beside a belt sander?

Re: modified malahini
No belt sander on your finish planks ! Reason being to harsh of a machine and you will never get the hull correct, if your not a professional highly possible to majorly gouge your finish planks.Use custom/ home made manual flexible long board sanders with correct paper. Here is a link one option many others out there also. http://www.eastwood.com/autobody/sander ... nders.html

Re: modified malahini
I made a long board sander. It is a slow process and I am going through a fortune in paper. I thought there has to be a better way. I want to try a cabinet scraper, but don't know if it will work with the curves of the tumble home?

Re: modified malahini
Bryan,
Hull looks great with the mahogany planking. Isn't spiling fun? I also used the Chris Craft red filler stain on my hull and everything evened out with the staining. If you have a decent air compressor, you could buy a cheap "inline sander" at Harbor Freight. They really work well, but eat a lot of air. Look forward to seeing you at G-10..... Neel

Re: modified malahini
Thanks Neel. Is a 6 gal compressor enough?

Re: modified malahini
Bryan, you will need to check the psi/cfm of the compressor at whatever psi/cfm the sander specs call for. I ran mine on a pancake compressor, but it really needs more cfm's than that compressor puts out to operate properly. I think you will need something like around 5 cfm at 90 psi.
Re: modified malahini
I just came back from Harbor Freight. The sander says not recommended for 1-6 gal compressors, and only runs intermittently on a 7+ gal. I did not get one. If you ran it on a pancake compressor, maybe it will work on mine. I'll go back tomorrow and get one and give it a try.
