Yet another closet build: Tango Skiff 13
What is it that drives us to build a non- Glen-L boat after building a Glen-L boat for our first build? There have been several of us who have been doing this lately and I think there are a couple very good reasons. One, this boat-building stuff is just plain fun, it gets in your blood and you need that fix again. Two, I think building a Glen-L boat first with the full size plans and instructions and the "Boat-building with plywood" book by Glen gives us the confidence to next tackle something that challenges us in a new way.
Ive been wanting to build a small skiff ever since I sold the Glen-Utility 11'. There is a lake 10 minutes from home with a 10 hp limit and I love to utilize. I also wanted something fun to run around that lake and fish with my now 3 year old son. The Tango Skiff plans come in just a PDF file and are on a grid in which 1 grid square equals 1". I wouldnt have wanted to try that for my first build. This boat comes in 12-17 foot lengths and it has a very interesting transom design with what amounts to basically built-in trim tabs, so I wanted to build this particular boat for that reason. I did buy most of the supplies I needed from Glen-L so still supporting the home base here.
My dad and I started this back in January while I was going through cancer treatment and surgeries. He had to cut out most of the parts because I could hardly cut a straight line or stand for very long. I then shelved all the parts until spring when I felt a bit better and the weather was warm enough to work with epoxy in the garage. We started after the new year and I launched it today so just under 7 months and 140 hours were spent. I have about $1,600 in the boat itself not including motor and trailer. Top speed with just me is 24 mph and it planes as slow as 11 mph.
All the pictures can be seen here.

What a beautiful and practical little boat! Perfect for the lake you're describing and perfect for you and Carson to spend some great times together.
Chris, you're amazing. Seriously amazing.

The lines of that look ,to me, to be more modern than many others.
The whole lines of the transom seem to emulate the lines of the modern cigarette boat; the sloped transom, and the 'trim tabs'
It looks like they took trim tabs and molded them into the transom (sort of)
The designer of that had a sharp pencil.

Oak is over rated, everything about it takes extra time; then it warps, splits or checks !!!

Very nice. The colors are classic, and the craftsmanship looks top notch.

Another manifestation of SBBD: serial boat builder disease.
Looks great and a lot of fun! Congrats on another successful launch.

Took it out again tonight. Perfect weather, no wind and 75 degrees. With my wife and 3 year old on board the 9.9hp is perfect and the extra weight makes the ride smooth and boat feels solid and steady, much more so than solo. 21 mph with all 3 of us and 23 mph with just me and the 3 year old. I might buy some bags of shot to put in the compartment under the front seat when running solo, about 25 lbs should do it. The ride really improves with just the weight of my 3 year old up front.

Excellent work Chris. considering the trials you've been through, this is outstanding. Congratulations on a very fine build!

Very nice! Cool design and amazing work! Did you have to pay extra for the IN..DY hull number?
Re: Yet another closet build: Tango Skiff 13
Ha! No, I did not.
