Hi Chips,

Actually, you hit the nail on the head. The wider aft area of the Capri, along with the added beam throughout, is the exact reason that they are able to balance the hull with the engine sitting further back. These differences created more load carrying capability in the aft section of the hulls. The same reason that the Barrelback designs, being narrower (especially at the transom) are normally relegated to centrally-mounted inboards.

Glen-L website does specify that you should stretch the Barrellback to 20' in order to have enough room for a small block v8. I get wanting to have the v8 sound but if you built one with a v6 I'm sure that you would be more than happy with performance. I'm also a big believer that you will be happier in the long run building your own boat rather than trying to buy a classic. These boats are absolutely solid without the worry of the traditionally planked bottom in the older boats.

They probably have a deeper v at the stern
The riviera is only in the water 8'' at the keel and 6'' at the chine and 67'' wide at the stern
if you added 6'' depth at the keel for 48'' and 4''wider at the transom it may work :shock:

I believe they made the transom wider than the center engine inboard.
Here is a pic I grabbed of a Capri, notice how the chines look parrelell to each other:

The wider transom will support more weight

A Capri has more freeboard than a Monaco or Riviera. It is a tight fit keeping a V8 under the deck of a Monaco or Riviera. The depth of the hull is less the farther back you go. Plus if you move the engine back it will need to be mounted at a sharper angle. The engine would not fit under the deck.
I don't have a picture next to a Capri but here is one next to a Chris Craft Riviera that has the same layout as a Capri. Note how much taller the hull is than my Monaco.

shaft angle doesnt have to change, if anything it flattens out,
use ZF V-drive, like a ZF 63-IV, it turns the engine around bellhousing FWD, and a self contained Vdrive,

I like the idea of taking a stern or V drive design and giving it the appearance of a classic runabout.

Perhaps as suggested by TomB, an 18.5' Roustabout. It looks very straight on the sides so it should be possible to form a tumblehome with the sheet plywood that the plans call for while maintaining the same hull width at the waterline. A more curved fore and aft deck would complete the illusion. It does seem to ride quite high at the bow at speed but no doubt that is one of the trade-offs of a stern mounted motor.

I do love the look of the Monaco but my main desire is to have a single cockpit so that occupants are not separated by a noisy engine or have to slither over a slippery deck to move fore or aft.

Chips, you da man! You're looking for exactly the same thing I am for the same reasons. Why V-8? Because V-8, that's why!

A recent Glenn-L newsletter pointed out that their Tahoe and Riviera hull designs can support higher speeds than the Barrelback hull. And personally I like the look of the Tahoe better than the Barrelback. I took the Glenn-L online planforms of the Tahoe and overlaid it on Barrelback. As you can tell, this is a seriously in-depth, precise engineering comparative analysis ... your results may vary.

The planform at the waterline is similar between the two, and the aftward Tahoe keel is slightly deeper, so I'm assuming that the Tahoe's V profile is narrower than the Barrelback below the waterline, otherwise the Tahoe would have the aft end displacement similar to the Barrelback needed to support an aft mounted engine. Are there any resources around that would allow a person to design the hull modifications to support moving the engine aft? Can Glenn-L provide that service?

Similarly are there resources describing how to install a V-drive or outdrive engine?

It seems that Dave Lott and Bob Yonescu were onto something like this from Dave's comment in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C28ApFa-rC4. Based on the "You're 22" forum (viewtopic.php?f=15&t=29922), I take it that Bob was in poor health some time ago, and Dave is no longer active on the forum. Does anyone know what the You're 22 design looks like?

If I could get plans for these, I'd be set. They're just plain boat porn. I've got spit on my monitor from making motorboat noises.

I think Bill Y gave or sold the plans to Dave Lott. That may be the only set in existence. Bill Y did the modifications himself.
