Hey Craig, looking really good. I've been looking at the gap pictures trying to come up with some ideas. I can only come up with two that make sense. Option 1 is to add a small wedge at the aft end to take up the larger gap and don't worry about the small gaps in the middle. The wedge might be a little noticeable because of the two tone lines on the molding, but I don't think it would be too bad.

Option two would involve building up the curve of the wing below the window, however this runs the risk of creating an unfair curve on the wing. You would also have to repair the paint with this option.

The boat looks really good, and honestly, it might be better to just let it ride for awhile and see if you can come up with something else to fix it. Don't worry about being a slow builder, I am nowhere near this point in my build. I just hit 5 years a last week!!

I love seeing these update photos and I am really glad that there are other cruiser builders getting boats completed. Someday I plan to join that rank of builders ! :shock: :shock:

Thanks Carl and Bill. Carl I have planned for the wedge at the large aft end gaps ever since I first constructed the frames and that is still what I will likely do. I have a noticeable gap on the starboard side frame only that I may try something else like maybe just a spongy weatherstrip seal or something that might conform to the void. There are lots of things I can fix later that wouldn't keep the boat from being used. Anyway thanks for the feedback. Your Boat as always looks great.

A temporary solution is to use some sort of gasket. I suggest the pipe insulation sold at the big box stores. Highly conformable, easily cut and cheap. At least it will keep out any wind whistling through the gap.

Thank you rleete, I had a similar idea but also had a narrow piece of 1/4 round stock that looked like it would also make a nice solution to the gap. A little more work with attachment and finish but I might go that route, it moulds nicely as well. I am in no hurry on this detail since I have some many more tasks to complete on the boat.

I could use some feedback on the Cabin Door. I have been planning to do the door as per plan which is a bi fold design but am not really excited about it. I would prefer a single section door but there is no room to fold out of the way along the bulkhead. the bifold would take up less room folded but still slightly in the way of a already cramped doorway. A roll up canvas might be a doable option for me or just leave open with no door except then the semi enclosed head becomes less comfortable for any passengers. Any Idea's or thoughts? Thanks

Craig,

How about a sliding barn door? The door could slide between the bulkhead and the head or sink. The bottom corner of the door might have to be clipped/coped to the hull. I have a similar situation on a small motor home. Mine latches to the overhead in both the open and closed position with some clever motor home hardware.

I tried bi-folds. The one at the head/shower is ok. The one for the companion way just doesn't work for me. There is not a good way to latch it open or closed. I'm going to change it to a double door.

Canvas/material is going to take up as much space as a door, and be less secure. It's also going to end up being a pain in the butt to roll it up all the time. Not sure many female guests would feel very comfortable with only a cloth barrier when "powdering their nose".

Make the bi-fold out of the thinnest material you think will be practical. 1/4" birch is plenty strong enough for most stuff, and if you're really concerned about the 1/2 to 3/4" space it takes up, you could always enlarge the doorway slightly without affecting too much.

Another alternative might be to make two smaller half doors latched in the middle. Not quite as secure, but still better than canvas.

Regarding the door for your cabin,

I was facing a similar problem with the open cabin approach I am going to use with my Vera Cruise. How was I going to provide the degree of privacy "I Thought" my wife would need. I was trying to come up with all sorts of fancy fold open head boxes that collapsed down to a reasonable size when not in use. All of the ideas were overly complicated. Since I was not going to have a door or a bulkhead on the aft side of the cabin, what was I going to do? My wife provided the simple answer.

The cabin is a small place and at least down here, most of the time it's going to be too warm to stay in for long (unless underway). Therefore most of the time people are going to be in the aft cockpit area (more on that in a moment). She reasoned that it's a simple matter to place a pull across curtain in the aft end of the cabin to give the degree of privacy she needs and anybody in the cabin will need to temporarily go aft.

Now to the other part of this. I say people on the boat, but realistically, I will never have more than 6 on board and most of the time it will only be me and my wife or only me. The only time I anticipate having 6 is when I am giving rides to people from work or if i happen to go to a party or event. So a bit of inconvenience for the cabin passengers (if any) perhaps, but a simple and elegant solution.

As far as closing off the boat when sleeping on board, I plan on a complete fabric and plastic screened enclosure for the evenings with zipper flaps for the screens (similar to a camping tent).

Craig, your windshield frames look top notch, even with the gap. I would think you would want some kind of rubber gasket regardless of what you end up doing with wedges just to keep things from vibrating around and scuffing the finish.

Thank you Matt, I agree with you on the gasket. On the cabin door I think I am leaning towards the double door and will get in the boat this morning with my two door halfs that I already have made up and think on it.

I have been disappointed in the look of the paint I used and regret not using Interlux Brightside to start with. I scuffed up the transom area and put a coat of brightside on and it looks a lot better. I will take a photo after I paint the blue area as well. It will take awhile but I will have to redo the entire boat as I go forward. Doing the transom is giving me a small area to test out the results and prepare for hanging the Motor. Could have saved time and money using the right product to begin with.

Question? I am ready to hang my motor on the transom at this point. I have never started or heard this motor run. It is very old but otherwise a cool motor. (Bearcat 55) any thoughts on how I should proceed. THanks
