That's a great idea, Matt!
Re: 20ft Texas Barrel
I've been climbing in over the transom because of the lower opening from the outboard cutout. However, I will be adding the motorwell soon so that option is going to go away and I too will have to clamber over the side of the boat to get in. My boat is pretty tall and this would require a three step ladder or step stool to accomplish. Then there is the problem of getting down on the inside. I can just do it, but my wife cannot. For construction, I am going to get a small step stool for the inside of the boat, but when finished, she will have foldaway steps on each side to make it easier to get inside.
I like your idea Matt, however, It would be too low for my boat. By the way, I think the 500 times you mentioned is probably a bit low!

Re: 20ft Texas Barrel
You got room under the deck for one of these?

Re: 20ft Texas Barrel
No, but I was thinking about 100hp shot from the bottle of juice for that glass water drag race.

Need a little transmission education . I ended up with a PCM40 1.23:1 transmission with a 9 degree down angle. Gear reduction probably not really necessary on a boat the size of a Barrelback. The current prop diameter and pitch with a 1.23:1 trans will be a stump pulling set up, right? May need more pitch for cruising, yes?
Pros, Cons of reduction gear trans on a Barrelback? Neel, Roberta, Bill,..etc... What do y’all think?

Matt... I would send a PM to Mr. Hot Rod (Paul Kane). He is the expert when it comes to transmissions and props. On my Gentry I have a 1:1 transmission with a 13X15 three blade prop..... That is with 310 HP. I would think a 13X13 prop would be good for your setup. But that would be my guess if you were going with a 1:1 transmission. When you throw that 1.23 reduction in there, that is the end for me....I think Roberta may have a reduction gear on her Torpedo and I'm pretty sure it is a down angle trans. But she does have way more HP than either of us !!

I run a 13x16 w/1.23:1 8*down angle. The diesel is 115hp and will turn 3900 rpm. The Tahoe will run 38 to 39 mph. With a little more hp and a little more rpm, the 13x13 may be fine. I would try the prop that you have first. It won't cost you anything to try it.
Torque wise the diesel equals about the same as a 175hp gasoline engine.

Ok, thanks for the info. This donor boat is working out great, even if the prop isn’t the perfect diameter/pitch it gives me a free starting place. Specs say the Supra ski boat weighs 2350lbs, Barrelback won’t be any heavier. Same engine and prop pushing about the same size boat....it passes the TLAR test.

I have just enough humility to share my boat construction failures as well as successes. I tacked the winch up with some little screws and forgot to go back with the big lag bolts before attempting the flip. Enjoy the video.

Better it should fall from that angle than when it was further over and would have landed on the hull itself. No damage, hopefully?

We field a lot of questions about inboard transmission gearing and propeller sizing.Neel Thompson wrote:Matt... I would send a PM to Mr. Hot Rod (Paul Kane).
