Re: Seattle Barrelback progress
Bob, a lot of the early work, you helped greatly with...
8 years ago, now, and I've still got lots to do, but I think the pace will pick up a bit now that I can see it.
This has been a part time/ spare time project, with some significant time off for life...
Hope it floats after all this....

Robert, she looks stunning. And don't worry, it will float. Think of the amount of fun you are going to have when you finally get here in the water.

Re: Seattle Barrelback progress
Getting ready to drill the exhaust holes in the double transom of the barrelback.
Any advice? Will probably need larger holes in the interior to access the stud mount of the exhaust cones.
I bought the Glen-l 2 1/2 inch stainless ones on sale and they are beautiful.

I'm sure you've seen this - use a circle jig to do it.
These make large circles pretty easily - and you can make this out of scrap

Then cut the outer hole - I was afraid of a slip - so I left tabs and made the final cut by hand.

I guessed on where the inner holes went before I put the back on.

That said - they were a little off and I had to open them up with the multimaster.. Once you get the outer holes done.. maybe you will have good access.

I bought the router cutter like Bob has. I was planning to use it to cut my exhaust port holes. I don't trust my router skills, so I bought a hole saw set from Harbor Freight, and used it instead. It was real easy and didn't damage any of the finished veneer on the transom. It goes up to cutting a 5" hole. Make sure that on the inside you have plenty of access room to tighten the hose clamps. Here's the link to the set below.

Like to inquire about how you setup the steering in a barrelback.
Did you use cable, Hydraulic, or shafting?
I have a CC steering box,

The steering box and column is what I used. Mine was from a Century, I converted it to the port side so my pictures show the opposite side of what yours would be. There are ends that connect to the steering box and the tiller and 1/2 inch pipe that is run along the motor stringer through simple wood guides and a slotted guild at the back to allow for some swing at the tiller. Very simple, works great and keeps the look of the original with the steering column.

I used a similar arrangement to Rick's. The steering box was from an old Hillman car. The pipe is jointed at both ends (about 36" long) to allow for angular deflection of the tiller and steering box arm. The pipe runs in concave rollers, but with hindsight this was an overkill, a plastic bush would have done. See pics in "Customer Photos", "Monaco by Alan Close".
Happy New Year to all.

I wanted the classic look but the function of a cable system. I used a seastar helm mounted to a bracket that I made, with a cable running back to the teller. Easy to adjust and center the wheel with the tiller. I got a 3/4" shaft and had a taper put on it so it would connect to my steering wheel. The shaft goes through a stainless steel tube with Toro lawn mower bearings at each end. See pictures below.
