You might be a redneck if...

Post by JimmY »

With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy and Glen L...

Last weekend we were over at my friend Dave's house who lets me keep my Squirt at his dock. His wife saw a new boat on the lake and simply had to have one just like it. Thinking they were crazy, Dave took me over to a neighbors place to look at an old aluminum pedal boat.

Now thinking Dave had had too much to drink that day, I didn't give it much thought until he texted me this photo on Friday after work

He was committed, or should be!

So being the local boat building expert, after Saturday morning coffee I headed over to his place to try and keep him out of trouble.

We made quick work of the lumber and supplies, emptying half of his tool shed onto the lawn in the process. We only needed one trip to the "Depot" for some additional hardware to attach the donor pontoons to the "hull"(?).

The "completed boat" including wall to wall carpet actually floated. I'm sure the 6" of foam insulation helped too! Next up was adding the powertrain

Power comes from a 1969 Johnson 1 1/2hp outboard. This baby is really going to fly around the lake! This motor belonged to Dave's Uncle and is in surprisingly good shape. Gassed up with at least 16oz of gas/oil mixture, we could not get this massive power house to fire up. Enter Dave's Dad Pat to do a carb rebuild while the two of us held our hands under it to make sure nothing dropped into the lake! He even checked the spark (zap! sorry Pat). With a clean carb and fresh plug, the little Johnson fired right up and purred like a kitten.

After a quick test trip with temporary seating, we headed in to finish up the permanent seating (the picnic table that has been in his yard for 25 years!) and Bimini (aka Margaritaville umbrella) .

Fully equipped and cooler stocked, we headed for the high seas. Good thing Ore Lake is at flood stage so it is currently a no wake zone. With the Johnson purring along, we could easily carry on a conversation. It was slow going around the lake, and we were constantly hounded by the paparazzi. The boat was suprisingly stable and handled the light chop brilliantly.

Now for some performance figures from our GPS phones:

WOT - 2mph
Half Throttle - 2mph
1/4 throttle - 2mph

Our floating picnic table comfortably holds 4 adults and gets them around the lake in style.

There, shortest build log ever.

Enjoy!
