I'd like to build the Lodestar.
I've never built a boat before and have (very) limited 'experience' welding. (mostly as an observer)

I plan to take some welding courses within the next year and buy a welder shortly thereafter. I'd most likely be starting the acctuall boat in 2010ish and im pretty open ended on when i finish but i'd rather it be ready to sail by 2015. (I have no clue how long something like this might acctually take) I will have plenty of help between friends and family and i have the space in the back yard to do it.

My reason for choosing the Lodestar is our family size. We have four kids so just with us we need room for six (and im sure we would be hosting friends and family quite often.) We want to cruise long term. So between the abundant accomodations and the safety factor of the steel hull and decks it seems like the right choice.

So am I crazy or is this doable ?

A boat of that size is at least 10 years work, working alone. If you do get help and it is good, you could finish in 5 years. But everyone has to stay on track and show up. Between now and 2010 you could round up most of the materal and supplies and make the build go faster later. It takes 1/3 of your time to find and get the material.

It took me 5 years to build a 37' boat by myself. I averaged 20 hrs. a week every week. 5000hrs. total.

Insane, no. Crazy, yes. Doable.... but just a mountain of work.
:)

I agree with 50 plus. Build a life boat first. Friendly help seems to blow with the winds. Stan
