Hi all, I have a little problem with my glassing. I used isoproply alcohol to prep before taping a seam and within seconds after applying resin it kinda went blotchy. Almost like when you tip a bit of water on to an oil patch. I thought any alcohol based solvent was ok. Thankfully I did not place any cloth so I guess I need to sand up and try again. I am worried about what to do. I used acetone previously with no problems but the local store was out last time so I got iso. It says the ingredients are It xylene & isoproply alcohol. I would love some advise on what to do to get it ready for another try.

Kind regards

Wayne Robertson

I'm extremely glad that you shared that with us because using ISO is something that any one of us might have done in the absence of acetone. Thank you for that, seriously.

Ok, so I have some questions:

In spite of the fact that the ISO is not right, did it clean up the epoxy?

Do you plan on finishing the wood work bright? ....or are you going to paint it?

As a hint... if you don't have acetone, you can use white vinegar (ACETic acid). It is effective, safe, and CHEAP.

Hi all,

(In spite of the fact that the ISO is not right, did it clean up the epoxy?)
When I prep for glassing I use my shop vac to suck all dust etc. It is very efective as it pulls any dust out of the wood grains. Then I wipe area to be glassed with alcohol. To anwser yr question... Once I had applied resin and noticed the problem I just left it to set up. I was concerned I would make matters worse by forcing more resin in. As it looked at the time the resin wanted to sit on top more than it wanted to soak in. So my plan at this stage is to sand all resin off and soak heaveyly in acetone.
What would you guys advise.
Also the bottle of stuff I used says its for cleaning brushs etc but the ingredients only show what I have already mentioned.
All the hull will be painted. The only brightwork will be decking and possibly transom.

Bruce, Does vinigar work just as well? I would use that over acetone any day. What about methilated Spirits?

Kind Regards

Wayne

Don't use spirits.

My experience with vinegar is that it works very well. I gave up on acetone about halfway thru my build.

The next time you have an epoxy batch going, you could do a "side by side" test of vinegar vs. acetone for us when you do your clean-up.

My thinking is that you use a little more vinegar, but it is about 1/10 the cost.

Hi again,

Thanks Bruce, I will try out vinigar.

I just sanded a small area back to wood and then gave it a good soak with acetone. It looks like then resin hasn't penetrated the wood much if at all. So I might have got off lightly even if I need a few more hours sanding.
