Hello all, I am new to building boats but I have been working with wood for most of my life. The love of working with wood has been passed down in my family for generations and my father has passed the love of wood down to myself and my brothers.

Although I have built a strip cannoe, I do not consider building one cannoe enough to make me anywhere near en experienced boat builder. I know I have a lot to learn and that is why I am here.

If anyone can give me any advise or tricks of the trade I would love to learn them.

Currently I am trying to get started in building the Glen-L boat "Florida Flats Flyer" my dad is getting started on building the Glen-L "Honker"
we are both looking forward to learning a great deal and making our boats to fit our own needs and style of fishing.

I am planning on building my boat out of African Mahogany and using my current boat ( a 1985 AstroGlass fish and ski ) as a doner for parts, like the motor and miss. other small parts.

Anyway, if you have any advise please let me know. I am always looking to learn a new way of doing things.

Welcome, welcome to the forum. I have to say that your post made me chuckle. That's because you said that, even though you have built a cedar strip canoe, you're not an experienced builder. Actually, having built a cedar strip canoe means you ARE an experienced builder. What many folks don't realize when they come to this forum is that an overwhelming majority of members here are on their very first boat build. That includes myself. Yes, we've learned a lot of lessons and shared them with each other, but in many cases, we are only a few months ahead of someone just starting out. So don't let ANYTHING intimidate you here. You might just be surprised how much your canoe prepared you for contributing on this forum.

Thanks for your reply.

I have to say though that even though having build a strip cannoe this is a totally different experience.

For one thing the cannoe didn't have any fastners just ALOT of clamps and glue.

A am hoping that I will be able to contribute though, as well as learn something.

To be honest my dad wants to try to start his own business building boats and we are trying our hands at building our own first to see how things go.

I will be posting pictures after I actually start building, as it stands right now all I have done is the building frame screwed to the floor. I am hoping to get started building very soon though.

I have questions about the fastening schedule that came with my plans and questions about which screws go where since the plans don't tell me. But I will get the answers I need and have things rolling along shortly.

That was my build before the Tahoe.

Welcome,

Bill

When Graham Knight was active on this board, he'd stated several times that boats built with epoxy do not actually NEED any other fasteners. The epoxy is more than strong enough. And personally, I have a lot of respect for Graham's opinions.

Well I started cutting out parts today and getting them sanded, thank goodness for large edge sanders.

I am hoping to have some of it glued and post some pictures by this week end.

I just need to figure out which forum is best for that, I am sure it is easy to find the right one I just have to look.

Also I have found that this forum is more usefull than some people may know, I have all ready learned a great deal just by reading every one's input. This place is great.
