Hello everyone,

I have been lurking around here for a little while, and I have a couple of questions (that I will put in the appropriate threads) so i figured I would sign up.

It would seem from the news letters, photos, and the forums that there is a wealth of knowledge here and a great group of people to garner knowledge from.... so I thank you all in advance for you help (and patience).

Have a great day.

Shawn

welcome Shawn...what are you contemplating building?

Thanks upspirate,

I am contemplating building the Flats Flyer... I am in the far northern reaches of Ontario - we have some excellent lakes that are laced with marshland (grat places to go for Pike fishing). The shallow draft and light wieght would be ideal for my purposes.

Right now I am building a set of 3 duck blind/boats (8 feet long by 41 inches wide) that I produced drawings for. I understand that creating "custom" designs when you're a novice isn't the best idea, but these things will only see 36lbs trolling motors, and they wont be travelling more than a few hundred yards in a day. The design is loosely based on an existing, comercially available unit.

Welcome to the forum. I use to fish on Rice lake when I was much younger. Also canoe on a lake in Algonquin park.

It dang sure aint the WORST idea either. It's obvious your creativity is already flowing and that will most likely make you a very good boat builder.

I've refered to this several times in the past here but it bears saying again. If you'll remember in 2004 the team of Burt Rutan and Scaled Composites went for the winning of the Asari X prize with their space ship "Space Ship One." One of the members of the design team had had no formal training whatsoever. He had no college degree. But he made the team because his expertise came from his being such an enthusiast that he was entirely self taught and so he qualified. It falls back to that same old thing..... folks can do whatever they set their mind to.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Dave.

With any luck I will end up with sufficient skills (with fiberglass) that I feel confident starting the flats flyer as a winter project for next year. Forum members have already sent me some great info that helps answer the few questions I had left regtarding the Glen-L designs.

Welcome ShawnR! The Flats Flyer seems to be generating a lot of interest lately. Glad to see that.

Good luck with your own creations--good for you! Let us know how we can help...
