Hi everyone, My name is John and I am very impressed by the fraternity and support that is given by the members of this forum. I am a retired woodshop teacher and am planning to build a mahogany runabout. I have looked through the Glen-L plans and haven't found quite what I am looking for. I want to build a 16' outboard powered runabout. I would like to have the complex curves shown in the inboard designs rather than the flat sided plywood design like Malahini. I have build several cedar strip canoes and kayaks and am considering using a strip built rather than cold molding. I have the classic Edwin Monk book and something like Searay is appealing to me. I need to go outboard because I am old and arthritic and don't bend well in inboard engine compartments anymore. I am open to suggestions and opinions. Thanks John

Welcome John.

Not familiar with that design, but I know basically what style you are after...I think Century built some planked outboards in the 50's that are like what you want

Welcome to the forum, John.

You must be bringing a wealth of experience being a shop teacher and strip canoe builder.

The Searay is in the book "Small boat building" by Ed Monk. the original was 1932, I have the 1947 edition and it is in reprint as a paperback available from the various booksellers. It contains 16 designs from prams to keel sailboats. I don't know how good the original 1932 designs really are and despite their classic beauty. How much have they been improved upon enroute to designs like the Glen-L that look somewhat like them yet are substantially different when you look at the frame plan.

My real hesitation about using plywood is what happens when the inevitable scrapes happen? I spent a lot of hours of my teenage youth sanding out my mistakes in the side of an old chris-craft runabout. Has anyone out there build a Malahini in other than plywood? John

Hi papajohn! Welcome! My father (Glen-L) has spoken kindly of Ed Monk over the years...

I just reread my post and I misstated the name of the Monk design. it is a Sunray. There are two outboard runabout designs in the book, Sunbeam a 14' and Sunray is 16'. Perhaps this post is better suited to the outboard or powerboat areas. Thanks John
