Does the engine connect to an outdrive with a shaft? Torque tube or similar arrangement? Does the outdrive handle shifting and gear reduction?

Mike,

Merc. uses a "rubber donut" bolted to the flywheel /drive plate to receive a splined shaft from the outdrive. The shaft has a double u-joint and goes through the intermediate housing to the top of the "leg".

When the drive is tilted the splined shaft slides in and out of the donut a small amount.

Once a year you remove drive leg and lube the u-joints and splined shaft. You also check engine alignment at this time.

The drive leg has the water pump, gear reduction, and clutch in it.

So in theroy you could put a Outdrive on the back of say a Monoco and then move the engine up to the normal spot and add a driveshaft with the appropriate u joints in it.

Or at the minumu you can move the engine a little more forward to balance out the boat with an outdrive.

I found a Volvo Penta outdrive for $75 is the reason I am asking. Also it seems that the number of outdrive boats for sale cheap is way higher than the number of used inboard powertrains. I would like to pick up a boat and strip it for parts if possible.

Merc did have the parts for mounting the engine forward, go fast boats sometimes have one engine forward on a drive shaft. I have never looked at one of these in person.

The Monoco could be done that way, but you would have to work out seating in the stern, or what ever you want.

Volvo Penta from the past was a very diferent drive than Merc or the old OMC cobra. I am not familiar with the newer VP.
Merc would be the way to go for parts availablility.

There were many times more outdrive boats built than inboard.
Be selective.. outdrives suffer badly from lack of care, and require a lot of tools to rebuild properly.

Volvo does make the jackshaft version of their outdrive. Already been done, on a production boat builder.
