(Building a Glen L 14 SLoop)

From what I understand, feel free to correct me,

1) I can either encapsulate or paint the inside.

2) Some people do not like the idea of encapsulating the inside and the outside of ply as any water that gets in stays there.

3) It's somewhat inconvienent to paint / encapsulate the inside of the boat after it's built.

--

Given that, I am thinking in terms of either

a) masking off the parts of the plywood that will be glued to the frame, then painting the inside.

or

b) encapsulating the inside of the ply with epoxy and no needing to worry to much about where the ply lands on the frame.

Has anyone any thoughts / comments / experience with this ?

Thanks

Dave

It's not that hard to paint/encapsulate the inside of the hull after it's flipped before the deck goes on with a small boat.

I've done both (paint on one, encapsulate on the other). You get good coverage in all the cracks/crevasses this way.(make sure you epoxy the limber grooves before you apply bottom planking if you cut them as you can't get to them later)

Then just mark off the underside of the deck where the glue should go & paint the open areas before you apply the deck or apply epoxy everywhere& apply the deck while still wet(messy, but works) or apply epoxy& let harden, then prepare for glue& apply.

Any of these methods work

I am at the same stage. I've already coated the whole inside hull and frames with epoxy. Is that enuogh under the bow and for the inside hull under the main deck? Or, do I need a coat of paint on top of the expoxy, even if it never has direct sun?

I'll coat the deck by the transom with bilgecoat to protect if from the fuel tank and battery, but do I need to also paint the inside hull under the main deck, since it is coated with epoxy?

Thanks.

If the sun can't get to it, you wil have no problems.

Kind Of Along The Same Lines; But I Was Wondering If You Can Paint Over The Epoxy After You Encapsulate?

Yup.

Just make sure you remove any blush before painting

(That's what I did... I fully encapsulated, then I used proper oil and fuel-resistant bilge paint. Some have reported good results with garage floor paint)

The Blush we mention is Amine Blush and if you are not familiar with it, you will be soon. It is a waxy layer that forms in the curing process of many epoxies. Some epoxies are non-blushing. But from what I have found, non-blushing epoxies have a much longer cure time. I don't want to start a discussion on which is better, but as long as you wash and rinse off the blush thoroughly, your paint will stick fine to epoxy.
