I have come across a couple of testimonials regarding XYNOLE.
Bill Edmundson posted his results on using DYNEL and found it much stronger than Fiberglass on Abrasion Resistance. Here is what I have learned.
Dynel is 3 times better than fiberglass.
Xynole is 3 times better than Dynel.
Both Dynel and Xynole cost more than FBG but if your cutting an 8" strip for the stem and keel thye difference in cost is low.
I have no details to post but these people were in the composite industry and rated Xynole the best way above anything else..Test results are in the Sept./Oct 2002 issue of Boatbuilders Magazine which I cannot bring up.
Just info for those interested. Stan

What about that stuff for floorboards? Just wet it out, and let the weave show; paint over the weave for a non-skid finish?
Anybody??

Stan,

Not doubting your research. I've just never used XYNOLE.

I'll look into it.

Bill

I assume you can cover your boat in FG and then add a layer or two of that along the stem, keel and transom?

XYNOLE was origionally developed to wet easily to be used in hand lay ups. It wets easier then dynel as it doesn't soak up as much resin. It also has good tensile strength but not such great compressive strength so needs to be used inconjunction with glass (or aramids) if you need structural rigidity. It's often used in conjunction with kevlar and carbon exotic layups.
The other nice thing about it is you only need a razor blade to cut it and it readily forms to complex shapes without vac bagging (relative to glass).
It's abrasion resistance is generally accepted as 60% greater then dynel in non vac bag comparisons....though I can't remember the exact paramaters that figure comes from.

I have a tech sheet somewhere as well....but it may take a little bit to find if anyone is intrested.

Time.

I'm going to order a sample. I'll test drive it.

I'm laying Dynel on a mini-tug this weekend. It looks good. But, the wet out is a pain in the ...
