Does anyone have any info on the Rebel Tug - I'd like to build one, but would rather see some build photos, comments, etc. first... Any info appreciated - Thank You, Eric

Eric

The Rebel and Vandal are KH designs. Glen-L just started selling them a year or so ago. The closest it come right now for pictures is under Small Outboards/Mini Vandal. I'm doing a scaled down version of the hull at 8'.

If any one else has some info that would be great... I don't care if this boat design has just recently been obtained by Glen-L - I don't work for them, so any info on this craft new or old would be great - also any similar craft 18 to 24 foot with a Tug Boat persuasion hopefully designed by Hankinson or again similar design would be great... Just one more plea and I'll be done... Boat can be planing or otherwise. Thanks-A-Million - Eric

I just started building the rebel tug. I have the building form up and started making the frames today. I am not very impressed with the detail of the drawings, all the information is there to build the boat but they could use some improvement. I am a shipfitter by trade so I have seen thousands of prints.

I could take some pics when I get a little farther in the project if you want.

We build large steel ships and barges where I work and I must say aluminum is an absolute joy to work with. If you are seriously thinking of building an aluminum boat now is the time, I paid on average $2.37 a pound for the aluminum I bought so far, which seems awfully cheap to me. Make sure you shop around for material, prices vary greatly. I ended up driving 6hr round trip to get the material for the frames and transom at 25% less then the other quotes.

Sorry, to hear the plan lacks details & precision.
That would be awesome if you could email or PM me some photos... ...looking forward to them.
Also, I wasn't aware this boat could be built out of aluminum... Is aluminum fairly easy to weld or not?
Thanks for information, Eric (epalmer2k9 at yahoo dot com)

Sorry you're unimpressed with the details of the Hankinson-designed Rebel Tug. Have you considered that maybe you'd be happier with the Glen-L designed Tug-Along? Glen-L's plans and patterns have long been considered the ultimate resource for build-it-yourself boats and watercraft.

Im sorry I assumed you were building with aluminum. I will get some pics on here soon. Aluminum is not very hard to weld if you make sure everything is clean and have the right equipment. A pulse control will make anyone look like a pro. You can cut aluminum with regular woodworking tools.

My original plan was to build a Bruce Roberts Euro 1200 but I decided I should start with a smaller boat first and see how it goes. I wanted a planing hull either steel or aluminum and this is all I could find in this small of a boat.

I may have been a little harsh about the drawings, they should be adequate. (I just found out Hankinson has a large following so I don't want to piss anyone off) The drawings have no welding details which makes me wonder if the frames are suppose to be welded to the shell plate or just the logitudinals?

What do you guys do for laying out the frames? I took the full size frame print to work and ran it through the copier to reverse the drawing so I had both halves of the frames and layed the whole frame out at one time, seems like it went a lot faster then the suggested way would have. Its just hard to read the writing when its backwards :D I hope I didnt break any copywrite laws, Ill make sure I burn it before anyone sees it.

Disregard the question about welding the frames, I reread the instructions and I see it says do not weld the frames to the plate.

Thank You, all details duly noted as needed
Thanks to all for the continued information...
I see a welder purchase in my future... ...hmmm... ...excellent!!!
Thanks, Eric :)

For welding I have a Miller XMT 300 power source, Miller Spoolmatic 30A spoolgun, and a Optima pulse unit. I bought all of it off of Ebay for under $2,000. I would not bother trying to feed aluminum wire out of a regular wire feeder, it can be done but you will hate yourself every time the wire birdsnests in the drive rolls. A spoolgun is the way to go unless you shell out the $$$$ for a push pull setup.

I got the 4th frame done tonight, I ran out of angle for setting the frames on the jig :( . Palmer Johnson Yachts is a couple of blocks away from me so I should be able to get some from them tomorrow.

What Bill said in his teleseminar about the drawings for the Tahoe are exactly the way I feel about the ones for the Rebel tug, everything is there it just takes awhile to find it.

Hope this helps,
Dave

Thanks for the info on a welder... Just a few questions, will you be running an inboard or outboard motor? And, while typing I've forgotten my second question, but eventually it will come back... Eric

Ohhh, now I remember - how will you deal with the dissimilar metals? or will you be mostly in fresh water? Thanks & Sorry for all the questions... I'm just getting excited about building a boat because the contractor is almost done with me's garage - not big enough mind you, but all mine's :D Keep the info flowing & thanks for hanging in there with me, Eric
