hello everyone,
I am building the Tango and I am ready to paint the hull. If I paint the hull now while the boat is upside down I am wondering how I will deal with glassing and painting the decking which will overlap the sides which would be painted. Do I hold off painting and turn the boat over, or is there another way do deal with this problem?

I personally use a strip of duct tape, about half of a normal sized roll or high qulity plastic tape along the sheer when painting that also gives me a break when I flip the boat over to use as an area to hang heavy plastic for just such instances that protect the boat from dings drips and an area. This area also doubles in most cases for bedding rubrails which most people install on boat. You can also use in lieu of plastic a good painters paper taped over a fresh layer of tape.

Thank you. I never thought about the rubrail. That will make life easier.

DCConrad,

I do not have anything to offer regarding your question, but I do have a request? Would you mind posting some pictures of your Tango. I am building the Tango's little sister (Minuet). I too have wondered when to paint the hull and how to handle the epoxy runs and deck paints. This post could not have been timed better. Also, would you mind giving us some details on the type of paint you are using, method, etc?

Thanks,
Robert

I have not done any painting yet but from what I have read and been told because my boat will be trailered most of the time I don't need to use an anti fouling paint. I am planning to use interlux brightside paint unless something changes my mind between now and the time I paint. I also heard it was a little easier to work with.

Anit-fouling is not the issue. But, use a Bottom paint.

I'm sorry. But, I'm getting real tired of saying this. Use BOTTOM paint on the Bottom. Use side or top side paint on the top side!

There is a reason. Urethane paints will blister on the bottom, epoxies don't.

dcconrad,

Bill's right...use bottom paint on the bottom. This will save you a lot of head-aches in the future.
