Glen-L is going to write an article for the WebLetter on "How to Drill the Shaft Hole"
and
"How to Treat the Inside as it goes through the Skeg or Keel on a Typical Inboard."

We would greatly appreciate you sharing your thoughts and experiences on these subjects so that we can incorporate your ideas into the article.

Please give us your input on the following questions (and anything else you think relevant):
1. How did you drill your shaft hole?
2. What did you do; use a drill? What kind? How did you drill the correct angle?
3. Did you fiberglass only the interior of the hole? How did you do it?
4. Did you use a tube or other lining?
5. Etc., etc.

Give us your thoughts and we'll add them to ours for (a) future column(s).
Please email your thoughts, comments, questions to John@Glen-L.com

Thank you!!!

Good luck, Dave.
Once you've accomplished the task, please elucidate us with a proper missive.

What I am describing is the "Mr Hot Rod" method...

I bored the over-sized shaft hole using the strut as an aiming guide, and a temporarily pinned "target block" to start the hole.

follow the link in my sig line and follow the "boring the shaft hole" link.

the rig used a hole saw, so the waste needed to be chiseled out as we went.

Once the hole was bored, I cast a fiberglass liner tube by wrapping fiberglass cloth around a tube of rolled up newspaper, which was covered in wax paper so that it would release.

I inserted the fiberglass tube in the shaft hole, and taped the edge gaps where it came thru the bottom. I injected epoxy between the liner and the bored hole in the keel to seal it all around. When everything set up, I trimmed the top and bottom of the liner, and smoothed out the filling between the liner and the outside of the hole.

I used my strut as a guide, and a old shaft as the drill extension. I already widened my keel from the plans to accept a fiberglass stern-tube. The sterntube is 2" O.D. for a 1 1/4" shaft. I temporalily installed a starter block at the entrance of the hole.
I used hole saws, Forstner bits, and anything else I could find to drill the hole. Forstner bits work well on odd shaped holes, until it hits full size end grain, then the Forstner just quits.
A hole saw worked best, but it filled up fast. I had to chisel out the chunks.
the best would be a hole saw extended with about a foot of tubing, allowing you to go thru all at once.
Once the hole was drilled, I epoxied in the sterntube, and the sterntube is the lining & shaftlog all in single part.

 I'm not proud of my method. I cut 2 vertical holes through my keel. Then I used a saw to connect them. With the shaft in the strut to measure, I used a drum sander on a drill to taper the ends. I epoxied/glassed in a PVC pipe and ground it smooth to the keel.

It worked. But, I don't recommend it.

Align your strut with a "Lazer beam" (Austin Powers), Mount your strut, Make a drill shaft that fits your strut, Attach a bit, Forstner bit is best... use the strut as your guide and drill slowly. http://s335.photobucket.com/albums/m458/BUNMAN-BOAT/?action=view&current=STA71347.jpg

We drilled before planking. Way easier when you don't know what you're doing :!:

John...

If I were doing it again, and reading your article, I would value a section on the tooling.

I don't have any metalworking or welding skill, so I could not figure out how to make all of the connections to get from my drill chuck to a 1" shaft, back to a hole saw (and the pieces needed to connect through the strut)

Slightly off topic....

I didn't want to incur the expense of having something professionally fabricated just to drill one hole.

Another builder on this forum kindly offered me the use of his rig if I paid the shipping both ways.

Maybe there is a way that the forum community could support other "trusted" builders through a lending network???

If I was to use a shaft tube on the next one, I'd skip the boring entirely and cut a rectangular hole, mount the strut, insert the propeller shaft, support the tube with spacer bushing as depicted on our website and epoxy the tube in place with strips of mat or cloth to bond the tube to the keel.

Bruce is onto something here ... The Lending Network could also apply to propellers. A collection of 4 or 5 propellers could be made available to anyone willing to cover the shipping if it's reasonable. A proper shipping box would have to be fabricated to protect the propellers. We could also post any spare props or boring tooling in a dedicated 'Lending Network' thread (similar to For Sale). We could limit the banter, just post items to lend. I'll be checking in with Steve soon, so we'll see what his prop collection is like.

Even further off topic ...

I would also like to see a dedicated thread for Videos, Photos and Albums. Currently content is scattered in many threads and is very frustrating to find at times. We've got more videos and albums on the way ...

ooh... great idea... I'd love to try a LH 13x13 or 13x14 with a 1" bore to see if the incremental boost (assuming there was one) was worth the investment.
