My plans for the Huck Finn pontoon came in the mail today. I am going to build the 16' version to use on our pond. I'm thinking about using yellow pine for my framing. The concern I have is using it for the chine and sheer. Just wondering about pro/cons, alternatives, etc. . I have read info about wood on Glen-L, that is where I got the idea about using it. I hope I'm not bringing up an old subject.

I have been told it doesn't hurt to ask, the worse that can happen is to be told no! :D

Thanks, Chip

its been discussed several times on here. You could do a search and I'm sure find some posts about it. BUT with that said I dont see a problem with it. It is a little heavy (realitively speaking) but not excessively so. It should be fairly rot resistent and its more then strong enough. I'd use it. :)

BTW your right it never hurts to ask

I recommend that you make sure that you do get southern Yellow Pine, 2x10 lumber and cut off each edge. Normally the wood in the larger sizes is flat sawn lumber. So you get the best lumber off the sides which gives you rift sawn lumber. Check this thread out and this will give you some perspective.

Thanks for your input. I first thought about verticle grain Douglas-Fir, but I haven't had any luck finding a local source.

Vertical grain is the last choice in any wood for rails, inwales and chines. I fixed the title spelling for you.

Oyster,

Checked out your thread. Here is my game plan now. Use the edge of the 2x10 for my chine and sheer. Then use the remaining for the bulkhead framing. The bulkheads are made of 1/4" ply framed with 1" and 2" lumber.

Chip

No problem. I know what you mean. I'm sitting here breaking in my C&C now so they will be ready when I start this project.

Yep, but up to now I have found myself on the right side of the grass. If you really wish to talk about priorities, for me all else is secondary. :P Heck I can manage a smile too.

I have my building form built for a 16' Huck Finn and want to get started on the bulkheads. They are made of 1/4" ply framed with 1" and 2" material. Is there anything that the big box stores carry that I could use for the framing? Already have the plywood.

Thanks, Chip

go down to loews and buy some SYP 2x10's as Oyster suggested. Then you can rip it down to what you want. I had seriously thought about doing this when I lived in GA.
