how can plywood sheets be skarfed such that they fit together properly and provide a good quality joint, or are you better off just butting the plywood together, as it will be covered with fiberglass/epoxy anyway?
thanks, Gregg from Boston

Why would you trust the glue in the sheet plywood then? I suggest that you do a test on gluing two pieces of plywood together with thickened epoxy and clamp snug and not as tight as you can get a clamp to go, but secure to hold the pieces together. Then wait even two days and report back with what you find after taking a chisel to the seam. Most butt joints work well and used in conjunction with securing parts to frames keeping them from moving any direction too. But along most of those lines the butts are done in the least streefull areas too.

When incorporating butt joints in hard turns or in the extreme foward areas of a boat, butt blocks on the back side are used in conjunction to the butt seams to make them structual. But both methods the butt block and butt joints joined by tape on both sides create a hard point for a continuous running sheet unlike most all scarf joints done properly too. In scarfted joints also wet out your exposed end grains before gluing up the joint. Dry fit everything and check along the running edge to make sure that the scarfed area is uniform and right angle if being done on full sheets before you glue the pieces together.
