Hi,

I know that most (if not all) Glen-L plans call for 6oz fiberglass cloth but a buddy has some spare 8oz cloth and I wanted to know if I could use that instead? I know it'll make the hull heavier and will take more resin to "wet". Are there any other cons that would prevent me from using the 8oz cloth? Oh yeah, this is more than likely going on a Double Eagle or Kingfisher.

Thanks,

Mike.

From my personal point of view I would not be too worried about the weight of the glass but the quality of the glass if its been laying around off of a factory tube.

the weight should be fine. i believe the Glen-L is 7oz. more important though is that the cloth is for use with the epoxy resin!! NOT ALL ARE you would have to know the source and follow up with them, or test some with the resin to make sure it will not release from the wood. if you are not sure this "free" cloth would not be a bargain.

If the product is not contaminated, 8 oz cloth is fine if you plan on painting the surface.

Yes, it will suck up more epoxy to lay it up, and yes it will add some weight compared to 4, 6 or 7 oz cloth but otherwise you will not notice a difference on the finished product.

If you planned on clear coating however (varnish to show a natural wood finish), that is getting a bit heavy and you may find that it would not end up completely clear...

Yes, Plywood is "real" wood :)
