i have read lot of the posts here and looked up some manufacturers data and still am lost, so i thought i would turn to you smart guys for some help. Plan on painting the bottom of my monte carlo as soon as get her flipped back over upside down and the temps get out of the teens and to south carolina normal. can anyone recommend a good bottom paint to go over the epoxy? all i see in the catalogs is anti fouling paint i dont want cause the boat will be trailered. Will a two part top side poly be sufficient?

Lot's of ways to go here...most will tell you to not use top paint on the bottom though.

I believe Dave Lott used http://www.supermarinepaint.com/bottom-revolution-SM-1000.asp
I think Bill E used Interlux VC Performance
Oyster uses Kilz
Ken used epoxy with pigment

There are more out there. It also depends where you use your boat (salt or fresh water), how long it will be in the water at any time (1 day or 2 weeks)...

So give us a little more info on your criteria and well have better answers.

I dealt with the same questions you had. My boat will be trailered and will run exclusively in fresh water so I really didn't need an anti-foul. Additionally, I wanted the bottom to be white.

Like you I considered a quality topside paint so I called Interlux and their tech support said that "topside" paints would not stand up to submersion very well at all. They recommended two bottom paints that would "suit my needs".

They have a bottom paint called Tri-lux II (only available in Canada) - the Canadian version of Trilux 33 (without the biocide - the particular type is banned in Canada) and ultimately the choice I went with - VC Performance Epoxy.

Here's the "blurb" on the VC --- "VC Performance Epoxy is a two-part kit ideal for trailered or rack-stored performance powerboats and sailboats. Formerly known as VC Underwater Epoxy. Produces a hard, slick, semi-gloss white finish with special additives to make wet sanding and burnishing easy.
VC Performance's semi-gloss finish makes viewing sanded areas easier. It contains no antifouling biocide. Overcoats have a 10 minute drying time. It can left to dry indefinitely before launching. Use with V170 thinner. Offers 320 Sq.Ft./Gal Coverage."

There is also a VC Offshore that comes in a few limited colours that uses Teflon instead of a biocide to help keep the bottom clean which could suit your needs if you are looking for a coloured bottom....

I plan on going with the Supermarine TS-1000 that ttownshaw linked in his reply above.

After talking to Dave Lott about his experience with TS-1000 and its ease of application and seeing a boat with it at the Gathering, the choice was a no brainer for a freshwater trailer boat. The wide number of color choices with the Supermarine TS-1000 is icing on the cake for me.

Do not use Kiltz on the bottom of your boat at all under any topcoat or under any antifouling paints.

Ok, Chris - Very big COMMENT on using Supermarine. The paint is silicon based and cures FAST, tight and hard. It is imperative that you lightly sand between coats at 320 grit or higher. If you fail to do this, the next coat cannot bond with the underlying coat and the fresh coat will draw up in a crinkled mess. Speaking from personal experience.

I run in the inter-coastal and bays with a trailer queen. I use VC Performance w/Teflon

Chris

Supermarine should be fine for your plans.

John A may have different needs. I was just responding to what I have used in a similar situation.

Sorry Mike if I wasn't clear...I didn't mean to use it as a "primer coat" but rather a one coat (only coat). If this is not okay then please set me straight.
