With apologies if this runs afoul of forum etiquette (I'll happily delete this post if it does).

I just saw a thread on the Wooden Boat forum that a gentleman is giving away several sets of plans he hasn't build and isn't going to build. Included are the plans an patterns for a Biscayne 22. Thought someone here might be interested: http://www.woodenboat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109406.

Not sure how others feel, but I've always heard one set,one boat, but since there hasn't been a boat built,I don't see a problem with posting.

Maybe it needs to be moved to for sale section though.

Just my opinion!!

Though it is probably legal to give away the plans if the boat has not been built, I suggest that we not announce or promote these opportunities on our sponsor's site (Why would a cheap b*stard buy from Glen-L when that cheap b*stard could get it for free?).

(just my opinion)

Absolutely! My thoughts EXACTLY.

Oh no, I'm sorry.

I see that's not what you meant.

Ok, my bad.

Ah, the joys of being a moderator. :D

I will take both sides of the issue here. I agree that cheap guys exist in boats even though as folks become more experienced, they too understand what its takes in time and effort with plans too and will take time to share their learned knowledge as long as people are receptive. The potential builder just may do this here if directed to the forum by the original owner of the plans.

But on the other hand, one more Glen L boat in the water beats one less set of plans in the closet. 8) In turn there maybe one more boat to sell one or more plans. That fine line exists for sure and mom and pop needs to be the final arbitor[sp] in these issues once again. Actually I think the plans are gone now. I do however know the guy giving away the plans. He is a super guy that has redirected his talents to restoring a real classic.

Now where is the neutral emotion? :|

One other point(or maybe Oyster touched on it) if the person that got the free plans comes here for help,he will be directed to buy other items from the "company store"....lots of epoxy, hardware, fasteners, etc to be bought here.

In addition, how many folks that were going to build just one boat have enjoyed to the point of looking in the catalog or seeing a Tubby Tug or Squirt for their kids/grandkids.

This makes for more sales too that wouldn't normally happen.

I have a set of Stiletto plans that were given to me that I may or may not build, but if I do,I will be buying stuff from Glen-L to build with.

In addition,if I give those away,I will direct the new (cheap!) person to the company store and the forum!!

How many of us have more then 1 set of plans? I currently have 3, tornado, rampage, rebel, and have my eye and several more. (heck I have actually bought two sets of tornado plans over the years and havent built a single one yet :? ) Whats the odds I will ever build all of them? Slim to none I suspect. So I feel in this instance if I wanted to give an unused set to someone there should be no harm no fowl as Glen-L has already received their licencing fee for the boat and the boat was never built. Just my thoughts on this. Of course that only works for UNUSED plans.

one more thought on this. IMHO, Plans laying on a shelf or in a closet, desk drawer, etc don't sell more plans for Glen-L. Finished boats do, the more finished boats there are the better for Glen-L. When these boats are seen at the marinas people tend to gather to look at them and ask questions. Learning that is is homemade by plans designed by glen-L will definitely inspire more people to build and buy from our site sponsor then plans languishing somewhere ever will.

I think the comment was more tongue in cheek which was modified after the original comment. I also think that most other misfits like me also responded in kind. 8)

This is all good discussion. I value the support of our sponsors, and occasionally chime in with my thoughts on protecting their interests.

I am sorry if I offended anyone with the "cheap b*stard" quip. (Oyster... thanks for putting it in the context of the edit I made, and a feeble attempt at humour)

I had not considered the possible revenue pull-through or the promotional value.....

My guess is that someone who would not buy the plans from Glen-L would not likely buy other things from them either... but I have no evidence to back that up.

I had not considered the promotional value to Glen-L of having another boat built. The question is... would that builder give the credit to Glen-L if they did not buy the plans that way? Or would they say "I got them for free from some guy on the Internet"? Again... I just don't know.

Oyster... you are correct that only "Mom and Dad" can tell us what they really think here and what they expect from the moderators.

Plans? Did someone say plans? I think I have "some" plans. I have but one thing to figure out now: What I "plan" to do with them!
