Just doing research on engines. Does anyone have any experience with the Evinrude E tec 300 HP engines? Fuel consumtion, maintenance costs, longevity. I am looking at these because they are supposed to be good for emmissions and fuel economy. They also weigh less than the 4 strokes.

i don't know about the 300, but i know a couple of people that have 250's. They are great. They are really quiet and get fuel economy that is comparable to a four stroke. They have most of the perks of the fourstroke with none of the weaknesses (that is, they arent has HUGE as four stroke engines). Have you ever seen a Yamaha 300 fourstroke. They are the size of an outhouse.

When my boat is done i'm putting a 90 hp etec on it.

The 300 is so new that there is no historical data out there on it. However, early reviews have been good.

It weighs in (dry) at about 528 pounds which is comparable to Yamaha's 4 stroke (V6) 300 - 558 pounds and somewhat lighter than Merc's 4 stroke, 300 Verado at 635 pounds.

The one thing common to all these 300's is that they are pretty light on displacement - the ETEC uses a 3.4L (210 cubic inch) block, the Yami a 4.1L (254 cube) and the Merc 2.6L (158 cube).

Engine rebuilders will tell you that anytime your horsepower exceeds the displacement (in cubic inches) the motor will have a limited lifespan before requiring a rebuild (normally 8-12 years of "average use" for motors with horse to displacement ratio's such as these models have) - think of an Indy car motor that produces about a zillion horses but requires a rebuild after practically every race - of course these are not as bad but if you compare them with the probable lifespan of Yamaha's 350 horse, V8 5.3L (325 cube) outboard, it will probably be running on it's original piston rings long after these models have been scrapped because a second rebuild is not feasable (but the 350 tips the scales at a little over 800 pounds and has a msrp of about $28,500 approaching double the list of the 300 ETEC which is in the $16,500 range).

But if you are simply looking for "tons of power and torque" and realize you are buying a motor with an "expiry date" about 10 years in the future then it really is tough to go wrong with 2 stroke DFI - they will "kick the snot" out of any 4 stroke out there in just about any head to head comparison you want to do....
