Just got the study plans for the Noyo trawler and Hercules, which look to be substantially the same hull, despite the fact that one has 3 stringers and the other has 4. On the Hercules the engine is placed under the wheelhouse quite well foreward, but on the Noyo the engine is placed above the level of the wheelhouse floor and in front. I like the hull and sea keeping of the trawler but would like to place accomodation instead of the fish hold. I note that several of the builders have done this, but how? Can I move the engine foreward by one frame and move the wheelhouse also foreward and up by a foot, or is there some other way. Would this make the top too heavy and unstable for the 8' hull.

I worked for a Naval architect when I was a kid. He specialized in those kinds of Re-fitting.
All the tales I can tell would take up too much room here, but suffice to say, he'd work his slide rule into a frenzy of smoke in doing a move like your suggesting.

Make a couple of drawings up and post them. Maybe it would make an answer a little easier for us.

Thanks for the offer of advice, I basically want to do what other builders have done with the boat. A good example is the boat in the picture archives by Rennie Delceppo (sorry I cant seem to get a link or picture copied here). After speaking to Gayle at Glen-L she convinced me that it is not a good idea to move the engine, but looking at the study plans it seems that the engine height shown is quite a bit taller than the one I have in mind (Beta Marine 30hp). Also I have tried to e-mail Rennie in the hope that he may offer some advice on how he managed it.

Regards Mike
