And just when you think you are done with me - I'mmm BACKKKK!!

Had to make a post about the issue of the day. Midnight is in the shop going thru her punchlist which included painting on the bootstripe. So I set the cheapo lazer level up and mark the front and rear spots where the top of the line goes. Made adjustments by raising and lowering the front of the boat with the trailer jack to get the boat lined up with the lazer. No troubles taping with the funky green tape. Cool stuff.

So I lower the level 2 inches to set lazer. Now I have an issue. Do I want to be technical and keep a vertical 2 inch stripe or do I want to go with aesthetics. The issue is that when the line breaks under the chine the bottom is virtually horizontal which throws the line back deep. In fact, the line two lazer lines separated almost 6 inches. Yikes. Looking from the side I have a continuous 2" vertical line. Looking under the bow it was awful. The stripe spread out very wide and then came back in to the stem.

So the arrow points to the problem area. The red line shows the continuation of the stripe if I had held a 2" vertical look. Note the difference. I chose to keep a 2" wide stripe regardless of the location.

While it may not be technically correct, it is aesthetically "correct" (for the Admiral at least)

Note how the trailer bunks are not matching the hull yet. This will be the first thing on the agenda when Midnight comes out of the shop this week. I have some bottom paint repair because of this misalignment.

my vote = project the 2" vertical line. That is the way the stripe will be seen. You will not be looking at it from the bottom. Have the Admiral look at it from the top, as if she were standing on the dock. If you keep the stripe a true 2" wide, it will almost disappear when it turns under the chine.

Hard to tell with the tape on but I think the way it is, looks good.

When in doubt go with what the Admiral says. You have to live with her and they remember everything. If you dont and you complain later she WILL remind you she suggested the other way and that you should have listened to her. Ask me how I know.

to my eye, that bootstripe seems to "hourglass" from the horizontal angle....

I can't advise on marital relations.... but I would probably say "yes dear", then do it my way, hoping she would not notice, then claiming some vague technical misunderstanding if I ever got caught.

Actually in flared boats foward and with almost all pointed bows, the bootstripes are normally wider in the running width. If you stand off looking at one side and make the stripe the same width with the increasing flare, the foward portion wiil show narrower.

The stripe foward by nature has to be wider to show approximately the same to the eye on a horizontal plane, with the beam decreasing and the deck holding a wider number by proportion is a greater angle to vertical, especially when your waterline incorporates the bottom under a hardchine boat. A lazer light will also give you the exact placement.

The stripe will also creates a "Z" shape if you paint a continuous line as it transfers from the side to bottom.

Well, the great part is that it is paint. I can always "adjust accordingly"

Go to the depot and get some 2' wide blue masking tape...apply it and see what it looks like.

If you don't like that look, add more tape to it per the horizontal lazer level and see what that looks like.

Stand back and view from lots of levels....maybe even float the boat so you can see at rest in the water from dock perspective
