I am in need of some answers. Me and my father are looking to build one of the 14 or 16 foot outboard boats. Is there any designs that are easier for a bigginer boat builder? How many man hours are we looking at both of us are very good carpenter just never made a boat before? Thanks all your help it is appreciated.

Hi and welcome,I built the malahini as my first build and had no problems thanks to the help on this forum.I spent about a year of evenings and a few weekends but I think you can just go at your own speed and put whatever time you like to get the finish you want.By the sound of you and your dad the only thing that will slow you down is waiting for the epoxy to dry. :D
Best of luck.

Im wrapping up a 14.5' Zip and I've got about 650 hours into it over 16 months. Apparently, Im a slow builder though.

The frame and plywood boats like the Zip and Malahini all take about the same time, money and skill. The stitch and glue boats like the Console Skiff might be faster to build, and have their own challenges. Im not sure it would be faster to build but it appears that way to me.

These boats are designed for different uses so you first might share with us what you want to do with the boat.

How long am I looking at only reason i ask is i have a young family and i do not want to be away all the time. So i am trying to figure out a time line of how long it would be. It's hard for us to recommend any one design without more info about you guys.

What type of boating do you like? Sail, slow power, fast power, cruising, rowing, paddling, skiing, overnite, fishing?

Where do you want to use? Lakes, rivers, ocean, rough water, calm, shallow, deep?

How many people?

How simple or hard? This could make a difference between inboard or outboard for example

Sorry,I just re-read your post 14-16' outboard narrows down your choices some, but you still have the where to use how many people, and what activity to choose from
