I have noticed that there has been alot of talk on here lately about clear finishes and while my only experience with a boat and any type of varnish is with the Tubby and Minwax's helmsman (not a bad product for that use) I plan on using Perfection Plus on the Kid Row. And before anybody ask. Why that on that boat? I say why not. This little boat has been an experiment from the start and this is the last step. :D Besides I was adviced by the fellow on here who most likely has the most experience with SM1000 and he told me not to use that product. So here goes. I have read the specs and I am now looking for advice from floks that have used Perfection Plus. I already have the varnish and now I want to get any other supplies I might need.

I like the product. If you look close at the vertical surfaces, on my boat, you can see my brush marks with the grain. The deck is smooth. The imperfections are the wood below. It could have been buffed out.

I'm lazy and wanted to use the boat!

Bill,
If your deck is smooth are the brush marks in another coat?
Your post leads to another question I was going to ask. Can Perfection Plus be buffed? This again is something I know nothing about. I know automotive clear can be and the Professor has proven that SM1000 can be. In fact it sounds like he is sold on the stuff now after reading his latest post.

The deck lays flat and it levels nicely. After 18 months maybe I did the deck differently than the topsides, more thinner.

I can't do varnish!

Chillin,

I have not used it yet, but reading through the Interlux data sheets yesterday I did discover a few things...

1) They do not recommend spraying it. I think it's because of the pretty nasty stuff in it partly, but also they said when thinning it for spray it has a tendency to run...

2) They recommend different thinners depending on surface / substrate temperatures. So just a heads up.

I would be really interested in knowing how this all works out for you, as I plan on using it for my malahini bright sides / top.

We sprayed it. You are correct, it's difficult to keep it from running and harder to work with in a spray gun than automotive clearcoat, but it's no impossible to work with.

Guys,
I'm not spraying. I'm going to roll and tip.

Well here is my plan so far. I am going to do the same as Onplane and order the 202 Fiberglass Solvent Wash and 2333n Reducing Solvent. While Im gathering supplies does anyone have suggestions as far as rollers and brushes?

gran chillin I know with there aircraft poly you can add a flow additive for rolling you might want to check to see if it will work with the marine paint we call it bubble buster I also know one of there paint reps if you want I can give him a call and check for you and see if he knows any tricks that might be helpful with roll and tipping

I have been reading and rereading anything I can come across about Perfection Plus varnish and came across Interlux's forum. Then I found a thread about applying it over epoxy. :D Here is a link for anyone that might be interested.

The Perfection Plus can be sanded and buffed. I did on the Squirt Deck. I rolled and tipped and it flowed out pretty good but still had a few brush marks that I wanted to get rid of.

I did the typical sanding with increasingly fine sandpaper, then buff and polish. It looks nice now and almost all of the imperfections were removed.
