Sometime in the future I will need to resaw some more boards for the decking. What secrets do others use to sharpen the band saw blades. A new blade cuts about 5 or 6 boards like butter then slows way down. I found a video on the internet on sharpening the blade but its stilll not like a new blade. I have three resawing blades that I would like to sharpen and be able to sharpen again. The best cuts are when the blades are sharp and then the least waste is realized. I have put new bearings on the saw. I have an older 18" Grizzly band saw. The guides are very important to be aligned correctly.

John-
resharpening is tough at best and the set never will be as precision as the factory tune. best just to get yourself a decent blade and you will not be running to resharpen. the Timberwolf http://www.woodcraft.com/Search2/Search.aspx?query=timberwolf blades are great. can do miles of quality resaw work if you keep it clean so it doesnt overheat and never cut old/used boards.

Billy what speed are you feeding the material into the blade? What is the cleaner and how do you use it? Maybe a better question is when do you use it?

John-
What do you have for a saw?
I'm using 3200 ft/min. on the Rikon. Use the flutter method for blade tensioning and only feed as fast as the blade with clear debris from the kerf. If you burn the teeth they will dull quickly no matter how good the blade, so open the kerf with shims as it is fed
The cleaner above works well and is friendly to the rubber tires so you do not have to remove the blade to use.

spray it on the blade, bearings, tires let set for a few minutes and wipe off.

Thanks Billy i will try that when I start cutting again. I think I have been trying to cut too fast. I have a 18Inch Grizzly. Bought from Craigslist for $375. It must weigh at least 400 pounds. How do you determine the ft per minute?

John-
the 18" will easily be up to the task :)
i tried the Grizzly site and came up with this and a 19"- if you have the model number you can get specs
http://www.grizzly.com/products/17-Bandsaw-2HP-w-Cast-Iron-Trunnion/G0513X2
this one runs at 1700 & 3500 FPM, yours should be similar. you want the higher speed in any case with the resaw you are planning.

I agree with the comments above for saving the blade when resawing. Have you thought about buying a carbided tip blade. I have seen them for resawing and more money, but if you have a lot to do, it maybe worth it.

I have read some place about a tension measurement tool, has anyone seen or used one. I have used the flutter method to tension, sut wondered if this tool would work better.
