Roberta,

I think I might have gotten really lucky with that motor find. I really wasn't looking for a motor at the time but I figured what the heck I'll start looking on craigs list . So as everyone else I started hunting , only was finding a couple of motors here and there . Many motors were way overpriced, but this one came up quick. I called the quy up, asked a couple of ?'s and told him I'll think about it. Not 3 seconds after I hung up it started to register and I called Ralph right back and bought it site unseen. When he told me where he lived I started to laugh, 1/4 mile from my brothers house. Hopefully we'll be able to get to the next gathering if I have the boat done or not, then I'll tell you what I got the motor for. Hopefully you won't throw me in the water !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Thanks, PS I have been keepin' an eye on your build to Great Job its looking awsome
Travis

I've posted about this before, but whenever the subject of cheap outboards comes up, I just have to throw this into the discussion. I do this because it could be an option that may be worth exploring. I know it was for me.

I had already bought an old Evinrude 40hp for my Zip on ebay and I got it for $160. But later I got to thinking, "what if I just took out an ad in our local "Thrifty Nickel" looking for free motors. I figured it would only cost me the price of the ad if the worst happened. So I did.

The ad stated that I was interested in learning how to work on outboards and I needed some "sacrificial lambs" so to speak. The ad stated that I was not going to accept anything that I had to pay for because I didn't really know if I would ever get any use out of it. In fact, I might take something apart and never get it back together and then I'd still have the problem of where to go with all that "trash."

In the end, I ended up with 2 more Evinrude 40s and a Mercury. All 3 motors where "in the way" and the owners were being driven crazy because they wanted to free up space and get the junk out of their hair. But they didn't want to just throw the stuff away because it still had goody in it. On the other hand, they didn't want to go to the trouble of trying to list the stuff for sale and then listening to people come out and beat and beat and beat on their prices. That was insulting. So they just figured they'd give it away if I'd come and get it.

The 2 Evinrudes that I got were long shaft versions of my shorty that I'd bought on ebay. If you're familiar with 'rudes from the 60s and 70s, you'd know that there is a removable section in the lower unit to adapt these motors to either long or short shaft.

The REAL find turned out to be the Mercury. The gal that called said her daughter ran the boat up into some rip rap on their local lake and destroyed the bow. She said the motor was undamaged. She and her husband had just been looking for another boat that didn't have an engine but to no avail. Finally, they bought a really nice inboard and now the outboard was, like I said before, "in the way."

When I got there, lo and behold, it was a 1972 6 cylinder "Tower of Power" 115. It came complete with the trim, the throttle and trim controls and cables. All for free. All I had to do was drive up to Kentucky to get it.

Good story Dave thanks for excellent tips. It's applicable to "Squirtology" as well. :D

Nice leaf blower. The boat is coming along great! I know it's not real fun working in the freezing temps. In my shop I've only got a 23k btu heater with insulated ceilings and it still doesn't keep it toasty enough.

Did you do anything special to find that deal or did you just happen up on it? That is certainly worth the money. Good find.

Yeah me too. And you're absolutely right. I swear I could smell the 2-stroke exhaust. ROTFLOL

Crashed Volkswagen, that's a cool motor.

Still thinking of heating the place we'll see, this job thing I have to go to is really messing up my boat building time. Now just remember the working quarters are small, this is the first boat build. Hopefully if OK'd with the boss in the near future, the new shop will be larger and more fine boats to be built.

Travis Thanks for all the replies everyone this forum is very helpful!!!!! 8)

Couple more pics showing the bottom and hullside being fitted. It was pretty tricky fitting the hullside by myself but thanks for clamps, screws, and straps I pulled it off!

It's amazing how much you can contort your body to bend and twist the plywood and reach with clamps with your shoed foot and the back of your hands to secure it

Looking good!!!

Everyone,

I'm seeing alot of talk about different gatherings. This is just a suggestion but in Michigans U.P. there is a place called the Les Cheneaux Islands in Cedarville. I'll give some web site information, and there is also the Great Lakes Boat Building School there. We could set up a tour of the place while we were there. Like I said just a suggestion. I just need some feedback to see if anyone would be interested.

Living in Wisconsin, I would be interested in a gathering in the UP. Right now we have an Official Fall Gathering in TN on NickaJack lake and a Spring Fling planned in Branson on Table Rock. I would try to plan around those to avoid date conflicts. It would be helpful to your efforts to pole in the gathering section at the end of the forum.
