I have ordered plans for the Monaco, but I thought I would ask this question while I was waiting for them to arrive.

I, like a lot of others love the classic look of these boats, but would love the versatility of the utility mod. So can I do both ?

I was thinking would it be possible / practical to build the utility version, and then a drop in deck that restored it to the "classic" version for those times when I don't want to be a utility ?

Thoughts ?

I think it can be done. the extra deck may be heavy to install. I am making the center of my bridge betweem the two front cockpits removable but it should be pretty light.

Maybe it will be done by G6 and maybe not.

You may get some ideas from Mr Hot Rod's site where he has built at "tonneau" for his Hot Rod.

I've thought about it many times. It can be done! I don't think weight will be an issue. The engine box for the utility can come out when you put the deck on.

Ok, sounds positive. I'll wait for the plans to arrive.

My biggest concern is minimising the impact on the "look", I want the drop in panel to look seamless.

Keith - I used the grout lines for the seams on my seamless engine hatch. Since I went dark with my "grout", this worked out great.

You can easily manage a 1/8 clearance on the edges. I would not go tighter than that due to the flexing on the hull

The gaps on our tonneau cover were left rather large because we'll be casting a frameless fiberglass part from the plug. We also left room for a finish veneer and trim around the cockpit coaming. The original idea was to build a tonneau cover to protect the engine bay from the elements while trailering. If we decide to run it full time, we'll have to add a bilge blower and some ducting to provide ventilation.

Don't forget to post some build photos as I'm sure there are other builders torn between the utility and classic version !

I am just beginning the Monaco Utility version (building frames) and also had the same want to make it look like the non-utility version. The hot rod cover looked fantastic.

regards Monaco utility

I am intrested in building the Monaco utility also, I want the look of the old Chris Craft, like the boat in the movie ( On Golden Pond).
Does the motor set between the stringers? Have no planes yet
