I just returned from the lumber yard less $400, but landed some nice material.

Sadly, they had nothing except 1x6 stock in mahagany, so I'll have significant waste, but that costs less than shipping for sure, and as a knife maker, I'm betting I can make a few handles with what's left over--maybe even sell some to other makers.

The good news is that they let me hand pick my pieces from the distribution center in 9, 11, 12, 13, and a whoping 16 feet lengths. The later will be my chine logs.

They had enough to overlook the plain sawn stuff and I found some real nice quarter sawn stock with exceptionally straight grain along the entire length. I'm very happy!

I have what I need for the frames, keel, battens and chine. I still need to find wood for the shear.

I also picked up a sheet of AB marine 3/4" ply for the transom, etc.

Prices were $70 for the ply and $5.37 per BF on the hardwood--fair I suppose.

No one in Wichita can even order 1/4" marine ply or even AB grade exterior (which they call marine ply), so I'll be forced to order from Homestead most likely, but man I don't want to pay the shipping.

Left they lumber yard, jumped on the motorcycle (it's great weather here) and headed to Sears where I parted with $200 more for tools and stuff.

It was a great day and I finally feel like I'm building a boat! Just had to share!

Congrats on the purchase.

I was making bungs today out of some of the scrap that wasn't good for anything else.

Then the scraps from those will be sanded down to use for wood flour!!

Oh, I'm jealous! Hey, there's a knife maker named Kevin on another guitar forum I belong too, great guy, makes great knives too.....finances his guitar builds with them. I wonder if you guys have run in the same circles? Do you have a site for your knives? I am hoping to finish a few guitars and sell them this summer and fall, to help finance the boat. Great to find good straight-grained wood, and there is always something to do with the scrap.

You may not end up with as much waste as you anticipate at first thought. I know from experience that all you want to do is flash up the saw and start cutting, but if you think about it a bit first I'll bet you can cut your "waste" down considerably.

As an example I got my Douglas Fir in approximately 8" wide boards and figured, like you, lot's of waste since my requirements were generally in the 5-7" width. But then realized I could first rip the boards down and be left with a number of 1-2" wide pieces which were scarfed in some cases to form the sheers. If they were too narrow for sheers they would work great for cleats/webbing to support the sole etc.

If you look at a single board and plan on two or more components, your scrap rate will shrink significantly.

Thanks for the tip Graham.

I just returned from Lowe's where I picked up all the form building lumber, concrete anchors which will bolt it to my garage floor, some clamps, etc.

$1800 hundred in, and I have yet to cut a piece of wood!

Now..., I get to spend more as I order some epoxy from Glen-L.

Oh yea, I went to a boat show this morning. I was hoping to get some ideas or fire up the drive to go boating. I gotta tell ya..., all those dang things look just alike! 'Boooooriiiing!'

Took the bike to get some steaks--It's time to grill!

Another great day!

Well, we are definitely doing our share to support the economy.

Glad you got some great wood and had a local supplier to go to. I had to ship in and got real lucky with the shipment but I was scared stiff until it showed up.

Congratulations, it sounds like you are off to a great start.
I remember that day of first big lumber purchase.
I came home and promptly declared "Hey Honey, I got Wood!"
She just wasnt interested. :(

You have no idea how funny that is!

Yea..., I'm hooked. The boat has been named. It made sense to give it a persona right from the get go--to bounce every idea off of--ya' know? My wife has declared that our newest member of the family will be 'Morning Wood'. I'm certain that this name is not very original, but the boat itself will be.

I'll start a build thread over in the small boat forum. I have a few pics to put up.

Here goes...
