I'm still really undecided as what I want to use for the sole and Nu-teak did look promising in a magazine article that I read. And the display at the show really impressed me - it's a great looking product, looks and feels like real wood (almost - real close you can tell it's some kind of plastic or rubber) I just couldn't get over the price - 3 grand to do my cockpit...

I get about 4 sqare feet of "strips" per board foot ripping them myself and am still going back and forth whether to use real teak or go with mahogany/anti-skid or Ipe which is similar to teak (which would be between 2 and 5 bucks a square foot, for the wood only portion).

The other option I have considered is the anti-skid "starboard" which runs about $8/sqft.

I'm still going to investigate the new composite deck material (for house decks) - but it's kinda heavy are runs about 8 bucks a square foot - but it does look like real wood and requires little to no maintenance, and comes in a ton of colours including a bunch that mimic real wood.

After chasing my tail a while longer, I'm pretty certain I will rip my own strips to get the look I'm after and my "wood boat" will have a "real wood" sole, even if it's simply 1/8" strips over 3/8" plywood (which is "real wood" for all the "traditionalists") :)

Yes, Plywood is "real" wood :)

A "professional" is someone who gets paid for their work - it doesn't necessarily mean they are good at it :)

It is also non-skid. they are putting it on a lot of upscale cruisers (i know Meridian Yachts uses it a lot). I have seen and felt it and I am very impressed.

Meridian Yachts are plastic fantastics, or so some folks would think too. For me I am feeling quizzy. Pass me the bucket.

I'm not building and period peice or show-boat. I'm just building a boat for family recreation. I plan on using my boat a lot (most weekends all summer long) with my family and my to beasts, including our week long vacation to Parry Sound every year. Climing up and down, off and on and all over the deck year after year....i need somthing that will hold up...and to me, refinishing the deck every year or every other year is out of the question.

These two guy's "bear-claws" would probably scratch the heck out of a natural wood deck :x

You will get no disagreement from me about building for duty when it pertains to dogs. But there are others that fall into the trap using the flawed logic that there is a lot of work to doing a solid wood veneer decking and even some percieved insane costs to it too only to find out later after all the work that the result is a bit tacky at best, or at least thats been my observation. Like I also stated this was just my opinion. 8)
