I want to build the Renegade. I like the hull design with the 12 degree vee-hull and the lift strakes and want to build everything below the water line in strict accordance with the plans. But I want to drastically modify the build above the waterline. How much higher could I increase the freeboard? I'd like to go up about 10 inches.

Well looking at the existing setup, its almost ten inches above the rails now if you consider the inside coaming and back decking. What is it that you would want to add if you raised the overall freeboard in the sides instead of just altering the coaming a bit more to comform to the engine deck height? Remember raising the freeboard at the rails also creates some addional work in the bottom and stem area which also may reflect some altering of the shape of the sheer battens and bottom materials too, to make things work out right when you extend the bow area up and out too. If not you would end up with a blunt nose part of the bow.

Its basically a 3 deminisional change that is needed at the foward end in particular.

You may be able to add more freeboard without changing the hull shape or sheer by angling the deck from the sheer upwards towards the coamings. Here are some pics of a Bandido build over at boatdesign.net :

Thanks Guys. The idea is to do away with the raised box elevation that covers the motor along along with the raised coamings, and instead, just bring up the elevation of the sides of the boat and have one smooth arcing surface topside as opposed to the multiple steps in height between the coamings, motorbox, and dash area. The plan would not be to increase the beam, nor to alter any part of the frames below the water line. Attached are some quick sketches of my idea.

Below is a sketch of the transom. The black lines show the transom per design with the raised coamings and top of the motorbox. The red lines show how I'd like to modify the shape.


Below is a sketch of frame 5 (widest part of beam) with black lines showing per design and red lines showing how I'd like to modify it.

Also, in regards to raising the sides, I primarily want to raise them enough to cover the motor, then raise them everywhere else so that I don't have a step change in the boat's profile at the motor. It looks like the first two photographs in Oyster's post have low profile engines. Mine will not be and thus, I want to raise approximately 10 inches above the present level of the top of the coamings. Below is a picture with an engine that's probably about the same height as mine. Of course, you can see this builder had to build a pretty high motorbox (approximately 10" higher than the sides of the boat).
