So, here is my Zip build so far! I will post these photos here so they can be critiqued by some of you pros out there. I want to catch my mistakes before they are impossible to fix. I consider this a joint project as I have already got some great help from some of you. Thanks again!

I do not know exactly how much I will get done on this build during the summer so don't expect any fast and furious progress.

I also am sending a pic of the boat that I consider the culprit of getting me into this boat building vice. It is the culmination of a ten year dream. I hope it is not offensive to post a pic of a boat that is not a Glen-L design. I did not know about Glen-L when I purchased that kit.

Excellent work so far Ches! You've made a lot of progress since we last saw each other. Your shop looks darn right organized compared to mine ;)

You will be on plywood and fiberglassing in no time at this pace.

Looks great! Good idea making the build form taller, that will save your back a little wear and tear. I did the opposite sequence, Zip first then built a kayak. Both of yours look great

Like the pictures so far. Looks like your building form is taller made it so you don't have to bend down as much correct? From looking at pic 2 your planning for a utility? From this same pick it might be just the way the picture was taken but looks like a major bow in the bottom from the transom up make sure its straight to frame 4.

Actually my shop is pretty dirty right now, but I'm fairing the shears and setting deck battens. But I'm still HAPPY :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Yes, I built the frame a few inches higher than the plan called for. Less bending for me, I figured. I'm 6' 1" and sometimes I don't feel like bending over while I work. And, that's right I am planning a utility. As for the bow between the transom and frame 4, that must be the picture or the lighting, because in reality it is dead straight , other than a barely discernable bow in the keel between the transom and frame 2 which I figured I would work out with a stiffener before I fastened the ply. Good eye, though. That's what we need!

Well friends here it is. It has taken a while to get to this point, but I have to remind myself that this is summer time and I am not even supposed to be working on a boat. Don't tell my wife!

Anyway, I've got the planking on as well as the encapsulation coat sanded. You can't see it in the pics but I also have the fiberglass fabric on the transom with some of the subsequent fairing done as well.

Now for a question for all you guys. I have a couple of spots up near the stem along the chine that I feel need to be built up a bit. Maybe 1/8 inch or so. I plan to use the microballoon filler. Is it better to do this before or after the fiberglass cloth?

The real boatbuilders will chime in soon, but I'm at the stage where I'm putting on plywood now, and expect similar 'build-up' needs.

To my mind, it makes the most sense to use you fairing putty before you apply the fiberglass. You might as well protect everything you can.

My hull will be painted, so I plan on using silica/microbaloon epoxy putty extensively in order to get all my lines as perfect as I can. I'll cover all that carefull work with fiberglass.

Your boat looks great!

Looks Great! Fair everything before placing the cloth. You need to have the surface perfectly smooth so the cloth will lay down nice. There are fairing compounds out there like System Three Quick Fair or mix up your own.

You can do either way.. before or after glassing. I did some before, and some after. Basically, as they appear I will fair before I take the next step.. and if I discovered something afterwards that I wanted to fix, I did.

Under the glass sounds more durable to me in addition to the glass laying smoothly.
