Finally got my batten stiffeners installed and continuing with the final fairing of the bottom. Both sides went on as one piece scarffed full length units.

Bottom lenghts will also be one piece scarffed units each side. Question is where to place the scarf.

I can run a full 8' forward from the transom and have the inside edge of the scarf 'hidden' under the bottom of frame 4, my thought is having the scarf joint end where it can be epoxied to the bottom of frame 4 aught to add extra strength to the joint.

I can run a full 8' rearward from the bow and have the scarf joint about 2' aft of frame 4. If the joint is here it will be a significantly wider panel area but a shallower or flatter profile to conform to.

The scarf joint for the sides landed about 3 1/2" aft of frame 4 where the side profile is pretty curvy and the scarf joint had no problem conforming to the shape of the side.

So where should the botttom scarf joint be, at frame 4 or about 2' aft of frame 4. Any thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Have added a few progress photos of the transom knee install, the batten stiffener install and the 'mock up' of the transverse floor board slats I plan on using, attaching them to the batten stiffeners.

Youre boat is looking great. I've never done scarf joints so dont have any real suggestions to your question. If I were to guess, farther back seems like it would be less stress on the joint to me.

Seems like someone posted a jig he made to do his scarf joints. Do a search on the site and maybe you will find it.

Mine ended up just aft of #4. If I remember correctly, none of the plywood is to be epoxied to the frame members so ending your joint at #4 would take flex stress off the joint but wouldn't necessarly add any strength. Image

The best part about a manual screwdriver is not needing to remember if you left it in reverse.

Completion is but one step in the process and not one bit more important than the others.

Hmm... interesting topic. I butt joined my pieces on the bottom, so I deliberately joined in-between frame segments so I could add a butt block 6 inches on either side of the joint.

Not sure what would be best placement, but I would think that farther back, away from the bent section would be better, like chris said. And I would think maybe nearer to the frame member would result in less flex like Buckeyesmith said.

Thanks all, to JohnK - have made my own scarffing jig, working well so far, sides done.

Definitely seems to be no definitive answer to my question, but thanks all for the feedback, guess I'll just have to pick one, leaning towards under frame 4 for the extra support and shorter width of scarf.

nomally the scarf joint does better in a not so pronounced curvature, however properly done it may be placed anywhere you deem fit, Though there is a tendency for it to slightly flatten out at the joint. I would make it in tha aft section with the trailing edge going aft.

The tailing section will be toward the aft end in any event, as I have done the sides. Thanks for the feedback.
