I decided to start posting some progress of my Squirt build as it seems to start looking like a boat now. I just got done with my junior year at WMU and am still in the process of finding a job/internship so I have had a lot of time to work on the build; definitely not complaining! I had originally started this build in the middle of July last summer but was only able to get the frames cut out before I had to move back to school. Luckily I had quite a few Squirt and other blogs bookmarked and was able to control the "itch" for the winter.

I haven't built anything before, let alone worked with wood, so I was pretty nervous when I started but was reassured when my cuts matched those online. The only problem that I have had so far was cutting the 12 degree angle in the transom. I used a table saw but the fence ended up moving and I had cut a 0.5'' off one side and 1.5'' off the other. This ended up being good though because I didn't realize there was a slight "V" in the transom. I'm still going to finish it though an make a wall mount out of it.

Anyway, I hope to begin planking this weekend, though my learning curve is making everything take a little longer. Today I'll be putting on the battens and figuring out how I'm going to do the sheer; a family friend made a steam box that he used on a restoration project so I might use that. I'll be posting all of my progress on my Blog and just post any major updates here. The blogs have been a huge help for me so I decided I should return the favor to any future Squirt builders. Thanks again for everyone's help and I'll keep my progress posted.

I have been using my phone for pictures so the quality isn't great for these but I'll be using a regular camera in the future.

Nice work! You look like you know what you're doing.

One pointer - Make sure you can get to where you mount the frames to the building form once you get the plywood on. (I tell you this from experience.) What seems like a good mounting point disappears when the hull gets in the way.

Keep us posted,

KB

I remember hearing this somewhere else as well, maybe on your blog? I went and checked tonight and sure enough decided to make some adjustments!

Hee Hee Hee I hit submit too quick   The first shows the interior view with the lightened cross braces, screwed into the additional knee braces, the second shows everything tied together with the coamings, from the top....

Thanks for the pictures, this makes more sense now ha. This looks like something I could put together and I like the idea of the lightening holes. The more I think about the difference between the 25 and 20 hp I think it's going to come down to cost. I'll keep an update on what I pick up. Thanks again Bob.

Here's a quick progress update. I attached the chines and first lamination of the sheers and have been fairing along the way to spread it out after I get the final sheer lamination on. After reading a lot about people breaking sheers I was surprised by how easily mine went on. I soaked them in a PVC pipe over night and it worked great. Next I'll be finishing the sheers and completing the fairing. I still don't have an outboard yet but hope to have one before the hull is flipped. I'll post more progress as I start planking.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the fiberglass kit last night and hope to plank by Sunday. I still need to figure out what color I'll be painting the hull and what kind of wood I'll be using for the decking; such a variety with too many choices!

Found an outboard. It's a 1957 Evinrude 18hp and I was able to get it for a good price. I looked at a few other Johnson and Evinrudes with the paint in pretty poor condition and at about the same price which weren't running but luckily this starts easily. I was originally looking for a 1950's 25hp so I could get the older style but still with speed. When I went to look at a 1957 Johnson 25hp I quickly realized that was not going to work; the motor was HUGE! Then I decided on a newer 25hp but after I found this one on eBay I fell in love with it. I'm not worried about speed anymore because I'll still go plenty fast with the 18hp and it'll fit the boat better. I also decided on the color of the hull of the boat which will be a light blue from the chine up to match the outboard and then I'm going to leave it white below the chine (I'm thinking of making the transom completely blue but I might still change that). Still not sure about the decking but I've got time to think. I'll post more pictures of the boat when the plywood is finished.
