I dont know where I put the other thread on this so here is a new one. The starter would not engage the flywheel so I decided I must have the wrong starter. I ordered a new one which is exactly like the old one. So after more research I have decided that there are different flywheels for Mercruiser inboards and I/O's. I purchased my 454 from craisglist and the bellhousing from Ebay (Crusader bell housing) and the BW tranny from a rebuild shop. All the pieces fit together nicely except now that the engine is in the boat I have found that the ring gear is on the forward part of the flywheel and it needs to be on the aft side. I now have to pull the tranny out to remove the bellhousing and the flywheel so we can change the location of the ring gear. The minor setbacks one encounters on the way to a boat can be frustrating at times.

Hang in there, John.

I am struggling to figure out how to re-install my fuel pump after needlessly removing it.... (don't ask)

Repeat after me.... "I LOVE my boat.... I LOVE my boat... I LOVE my boat"

Bruce,

I won't ask why you removed it but what is the problem re-installing it? Maybe someone can help. If it is what I am thinking I may have some suggestions.

Some bell housing have a rear mounted starter, ovet the trane. It will still need to be pulled. But the rear mounted ring gear,if I remember right is for a bell housing with the starter over the trans.???

Yes that is true and I have the rear high mounted starter. the problem I ran into is the flywheel is for the starter that is mounted in front and I didnt catch that before i installed the motor. Just a minor setback.

What about removing the front guard used on the MIE motor and instaling the I/O starter?

The inboard bellhousing does not have provision for the I/0 starter. I did see some bellhousings on the internet that appeared to have both provisions but that would still require removal of the tranny, etc. This evening I start removing stuff.

John, I'm not totally sure about big block Chevs but the small blocks have two different dia. flywheels they use. They both require a different starter. Like I said I dont know if this is an issue for BBC but I thought I would toss this out for you just in case it is. I have seen many a car builder wonder why his starter would not engage the flywheel only to discover they had the wrong flywheel/starter combo.

Good luck :)

BTW John, you should be able to find your old thread by clicking on the link near the top of the page that says 'View your posts". Just above the blue box that says Board index there are four links("View unanawered posts", "View active topics", "View new posts", "View your posts"). Hopefully this helps you out.

Thanks Duane, I found the old thread. I now have the tranny, bell housing and flywheel removed. I also managed to break the ring gear and found out the flywheel is not going to work as it has a groove or notch in it to accept the ring gear. I guess I thought it would be like an aircraft one. Any one got a lead on a 454 flywheel for a straight inboard? I shall go shopping on Monday.

Great day today. Picked up an AT-6 at Ft Myers. Got home and finished the starter mess. Had to lift the engine 6 inches to pull the tranny, bellhousing and flywheel. Spent the last week an hour here and there putting the new flywheel in. Tried the key tonight and the engine turns over. So back to forward progress.

Never ending maintenance. Thats rough having to pull the motor to change the starter. We've had planes in the shop where we had to pull the magnetos to change the oil filiter. Someone could do better design work.

Its not ours. We just get to use it. Its a divorce case and the wife got the plane. We picked it up and now have to do the annual and of course make sure it flys ok and do regular flights to keep it in good shape. Tough job I know but somebody has to do it.
