Folks,
The skiff has made it to the lake and launch went off without a hitch. Motor ran great and the grandkids had a ball.

You are right even the big boys had fun!!!!
Warren
It handled great even without the skeg. I ran it in the wakes of some big boats and it was fine. Not sure how it would act in a big wind but maybe being a narrow bottom has something to do with it being ok. It turns like a dream and carves into the water perfect. Maybe if Oyster could offer me some insight on the possible downside of not having a skeg on this type of boat it would be appreciated. The transom height was good and it didn't porpoise or anything.

The effects of not having a skeg on flat bottom boats in all but a few cases is really not noticable. This time you had the boat loaded, which slows the boat down and also sits the boat deeper into the water for the most part the entire length of the boat.
The only downside of loading a flat bottom boat to get some additional bottom in the water is when you are by yourself and load way too much foward to get a tiller steering engine power plant to flatten out with just your weight and engine back aft. This will cause some bow steering. You will need some additional runs to learn your boat, no different than anyone else and any other boat too. I just wanted to address some of the wide variety of conditions that may pop up with these types of boats.

The handling issues is mainly when you are in the boat by yourself and especially with a tiller handle on a decent planing speed. Your particular engine may not create a problem. But also with that being said, test it while running a moderate speed. You can get sideways and even flip the boat in certain downsea conditions in a combination of wind and swell when operating the boat full bore and with some boats thats truely over powered.
Oh I did not see any Pepsi being sprayed across anyone at the finish line here. 8)

Thanks Oyster
Just had of out again with a buddy on board, 20 mph wind , ran along the shoreline and it handled fine. Like you said I will do few trips and see what works best. If I have to I'll flip it and put a skeg on it but for the most part it will be for channel putts and and fishing withe kids. Thanks again

Nice work, Wardy !

I don't know if you recall, but you posted your thoughts in a thread I started about building a boat around a 1960 Evinrude 18hp (square cowling, 24:1 mix).
I wasn't crazy about a flat bottom because of how I'll be using the boat but after seeing yours I'm not necessarily gonna stick to my guns on that...
I might have a bit of weight up front but I will be using it by myself primarily so I'm really interested in your thoughts on the motor/hull while you're out on your own.

If I start now, I wonder if I can be done before Warren's finished his ?....
