Glen-L website was off-line Wednesday 10 April 2014

Postby John B » Thu Apr 17, 2014 8:26 am

Dear Boatbuilders,

We are so sorry for any inconvenience you were caused by the outage of our websites over the past 20 hours or so.

Everything is back to normal now (we think), so please get back to work building your Glen-L boats

It appears that our "professional" hoity-toity web host decided it was time to "improve" something or other, and by so doing they took us into a wormhole (along with thousands of other websites). Something to do with their Provo, Utah data center "experiencing packet loss and latency" issues which affected literally thousands of websites.

I've heard from a few sources that many of the large web hosts have transferred their servers/operations to some huge data center in Provo because it saves them a lot of money. In exchange for THEM saving money, however, it sure seems to me like their RELIABILITY has sunk to a new LOW.

So if any of you have any GOOD experiences with large-scale web hosts who do NOT use this Provo, Utah data center, please let us know because we're ready to move our websites somewhere else where we can be assured that we'll have 99.9999% (at least!) uptime on our websites.

All the best to you from all of us here at Glen-L!

Avoid Network Solutions at all costs.

Thanks for the tip Andy.

Have you (or anyone else) had any experience with JustHost, RapidVPS, or Liquid Web?

John:

My employer uses DreamHost - see http://www.dreamhost.com/

I find them to be responsive and reliable.

Main offices are here in So. Cal; not sure where physical servers are.
