1956 Johnson 5.5hp Outboard on 8' Polliwog

Post by harborma » Wed May 27, 2015 10:45 pm

Hey!

I'm getting to the finishing stages of my first boat build, a Devlin Polliwog (hoping to build the Zip next), and I was curious if a 5.5hp Johnson outboard would be suitable for a such a boat? Or would it be complete overkill? It's a small boat but I still want to have a little bit of fun! Any questions, comments, or concerns would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I know very very little (nothing) about outboards :o

If not, what do you suggest?

Thanks!
Derek

:D Or even a powerful electric motor-could put deep-cycle battery up for'ward to offset your weight and weight of motor

When I was a kid, we ran a 3 hp Evinrude on an 8 foot dinghy. That seemed like about the right amount of power and weight. I'm currently using a 5.5 hp Johnson (1957, as it turns out) on a 10 foot Imp. That also seems like about the right size and weight engine for that size of boat.

Imp built and launched. Thinking hard about Boat 2.0
