Varnish over epoxy

Post by SamsBoat » Thu Jun 23, 2016 6:30 pm

I'm looking for some recommendations for varnish over the epoxy fiberglass on outside of the boat. What is working well and not so well? We are using the Silver Tip Epoxy. Also any recommendation for a good sealer for the interior of the boat?

I tried Epifanes clear varnish (thinned and one spot straight) over a 3 week epoxy cure-would not set up right.still tacky after sitting in warm boathouse for three weeks more.I got disgusted and used water-based Zip Strip to remove varnish and used primer and paint instead.Should have tried a 2 part polyurethane instead(Interlux)For sealer on inside of hull,I used CPES I got from the Rot Doctor Place.Fumy stuff-use respirater. Also used little hand operated spray bottles( cheapie ones from hardware store) adjusted so more product came out then air and sprayed into cracks and crannies unreachable from brush.

I used Petit Flagship Varnish over the epoxy inside and out. Satin on the inside, gloss on the outside.

I used Epifanes rapid coat and had good results - epoxy was cured for longer than a month which may have made a difference. I used that as my build coats and then topped with Interlux Schooner (I'm not brand loyal).

You are also asking about an interior sealer - if you are talking "below decks", I went with Interlux "Interprotect 2000" after asking on this site a few years back when I was "looking". It's meant as a hull primer but works awesome down in the bilge area to protect against all manner of "cooties".

If you're using System 3 Silver Tip epoxy underneath, this is the varnish I would recommend:

I'm supposed to get Pettit EasyPoxy High Build Varnish tomorrow. I'll report. I've had good luck with this line of paint.

I'm using Pettit Z Spar Captain's 1015 and I'm really liking it. I did let the epoxy cure for at least 2 weeks. In the heat we're having the 1015 is dry ib a few hours.

I'm using Petit Z-Spar Captain's Varnish over System Three Silvertip & fiberglass, and I've been quite happy with it.

I did a test of Pettit EasyPoxy High Build Varnish over well cured MAS yesterday. Works Great! It was dry to touch in 4 hours. No thinning required and very little smell.

I was just wondering what the epoxy looks like when too much UV gets to it and what we should look for? Does the epoxy begin to turn a darker brown or begin to bubble?

With too much UV exposure the epoxy finish turns whitish, often blotchy areas of the whitish color.
