Sherwood Queen by Clark Johnson
April 10, 2007 These photos show that my "Queen" is finally coming together. The motor and all controlls are installed and functional. The pilot house is framed up but the roof and seating are not done yet. I added two extra purlins under the roof sheathing as 1/4" plywood will not take the proper curve without hollows and humps as the thing is designed on the plans. I also had many issues with the design of the splash well that I have solved in my own way. If the designer had made the well 32" wide instead of 24" the motor controls would have had somewhere to go. I don't know how others have solved these problems, but I'm sure not the same way I did.
April 14 Took this picture today. The boat is not finished yet but the "house" is completed exept for windows, finish work and paint. It was a nice day and I couldn't stand waiting any longer so I took it to water. We were out about 3 hours. Got the inital break-in on the motor, a 15 hp merc. bigfoot. If any one is is concerned about the 10 - 15 hp recomendation for this boat let me say that at 3/4 throttle we were at or slighly beond hull speed and at full throttle the stern was squatting so bad that it was just wasting fuel and going no faster. I have power trim, and nothing would improve the performance except sending my passenger up into the bow to hold the nose down. Full throttle still lifted the bow and squatted the stern without any noticeable improvement in speed. The great thing is that at trolling speed this motor will idle down so slow that you can look over the stern and watch the prop turn. and the noise level is nil. I am so very pleased with this boat and motor combination. It exceeds my expectations in every way!
22 May 2007 Here is my completed Sherwood Queen headed out for a day of fishing.
