Today’s article is a letter to the editor submitted to “Small Craft Advisor” magazine. We advertise in SCA and it is a wonderful magazine for sailors and would-be sailors. I really thought that Roger’s letter was such a wonderful expression of boatbuilding that I wanted to share it. We have Roger’s permission to use it.

?Rudy Heckman was 40 years old when he immigrated to the United States from a little town in Germany. Although he spoke no English, he was able to find work at a machine shop on Terminal Island, the port for Los Angeles.
As he drove to work each morning he crossed a bridge where numerous boats were nested in slips. Rudy was especially enamored with the tall masts of the cruising sailboats. Thoughts turned to dreams of sailing the ocean…

A builder emailed today asking if the side planking for the Outrage is attached to the frames. The Outrage is a 16′ deep vee ski boat and is built using sheet plywood construction. My father wrote an article on the subject of fastening planking to frames and includes a great history lesson about the evolution of plywood boat construction.

Building a boat is definitely an addiction and boat builder Kevin Brown has coined that phrase for himself.
The Squirt is the second Glen-L boat that Kevin has built and is not the last. The first was our Tubby Tug design that is a little 9′ tug he built for his daughter.

Stitch and glue boat building is touted by many as the preferred method of building for the first timer. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, this type of boat building is done by forming plywood panels around forms and then stitching them together.

At the 2009 Gathering of Boatbuilders that was held in Alabama, we hired a Videographer.
