How to make square into round...?

I'm needing to slide the round 'kranse iron' or 'eyeband' in the photo onto the last 6" or so of the square bowsprit (3.5" X 3.5" Doug Fir). The ID of the kranse iron is 2.25", the bowsprit is 7' long. Needing to know how to make a 'square' member into a partial 'round' member...? I'd like to be pre...

Maybe take a look at the G-L 'Bull's Eye' which looks to be similar to your modified Imp...

Re: Minuet and Glen L 17

Porky - Suggest two things: Purchase the (inexpensive) Study Plans for one or both of these designs. This should give you extensive insight into the building process. Also get a copy of the (Glen-L) publication Boat Building with Plywood which (assuming this is your first build) will be an invaluabl...

Re: Glen L 15 in Montana

Level has been a tough concept for me during my Francis Drake build. I too built a raised platform (40' X 15') on which to build the boat; finding 'level' here was challenge #1. After righting the hull (flipping it rightside-up) the next 'level hurdle' was getting the hull level, both fore-and-aft a...

Francis Drake (C-Flex) update

Hoping to give encouragement to others who might be in the midst of (or contemplating) a 'large' project, here's an update on my (now decade-and-half long) Francis Drake build. [Photos of the build in more-or-less chronological order can be found in the Glen-L Customer Photos site]. The FD is very m...

Carriage Bolts ?!?

The image below is from the plans for the 29 foot Francis Drake FG version, specifically the detail for the bulwark cap. Note that the 1 X 3 cap is secured by an inner and outer 1 X 2 'shear cleat', and that the plans say to attach these cleats with 5/16" 'Carr. Bolts' at 6" intervals? I assume that...

Re: Starpath 44 project boat

Interested in what you found (assuming you did indeed take a look...?) Hazarding a guess, it seems likely that no more than a dozen or so Starpath have been built, based on the size + length of time required to construct, plus the lack of 'customer photos' here on the Glen-l site. You indicate that ...

Re: Ballast Lead

The Francis Drake (FG) has internal ballast. I used lead 'pigs' or 'ingots' (conjure a mental picture of the gold stored in Ft. Knox); in effect 50 lb 'bricks'. Using a compound miter saw with a non-ferrous blade, I cut each piece to fit into the keel cavity, packing each as close together as possib...

See Minuet page @ Boat Designs dot com / photos / Roger C Hall. Looks like Mr. 'H' used a tabernacle on his heavily modified Minuet.

Re: Douglas Fir

You don't say specifically if the bargain T&G is 'clear', i.e. generally free from knots... This is important. From Glen-L description of woods to be used on Ensenada: " Douglas fir (preferably dense clear vertical grain) and Sitka spruce are specified because they are light and strong." Should look...

Re: Varnishing over epoxy top decking

If you do use epoxy, you must remove the amine blush prior to over-coating with anything. (Warm water and a nylon scrub brush). And overcoat the epoxy you must, as epoxy has a very short life when exposed to sunlight (UV) *unless* it is over-coated. If using varnish, use a name-brand "marine" varnis...

Re: SV - Melodaire - (Lodestar) 55' Steel Sail Boat

Welcome, and a tip-o'-the-hat to you for dreaming BIG. Seems like there's only a few of us here building 'non-trailerable' (larger than ~ 25') Glen-L sailboats; though you didn't ask for it, misery loves company so here's a few tips: This will be > a 10,000 hour project. Plan ahead. Have all materia...

Re: 8Ball wood substitution

In reading the one-sheet for the 8-ball, the emphasis seems to be on keeping the weight down. Hence, the call-out for Mahogony or Spruce, which are quality boat-building woods that have low lbs/cu.ft. There are others! See the link below for wood characteristics and pick those that are locally avail...
