Re: Guitar builder looking to build a boat

The Zip is a fun project. Keep it simple and light and 20hp will be fine.

Re: What should I have on board a small power boat?

Your best source is a DNR rule book for your state and a US Coast Guard book for boating regulations. There you can find specific requirements for your particular boat. These can also be found online. Happy boating.

Summer is still young and you will soon have a Glen L smile that won't go away.

Re: Squirt in Manitoba

Wide boards is probably the best choice. You can resaw and book match solid boards to about 3/16" for a boat like the Squirt. It is possible to use 3mm or 4mm Okoume plywood but the veneers are very thin and you could sand through the top layer very easily. Nicely installed plywood decking can be st...

Re: FOOD for G-15

Pork and/or turkey sounds great. We can discuss as a group at the gathering which sides, desserts, and other goodies we need and, based on participation, decide how much. I think we can get much locally. People can kick back into the kitty or provide food items. For us, since we have a nice kitchen,...

Re: Steve B.'s ZZZIP Build

What's nice about adjustable trim tabs is you can trim differently for changing conditions and loading. I really like them on the Torpedo. I'm sure they will be a great asset on the Zip.

Re: Slither build in GA

I just drew a line from the point where the transition joint was to be made to the center of the chine at the stem and faired the chine bottom to the line. It's just a guide to keep the planking joint as even as possible.

Re: Slither build in GA

The transition will occur where the lap joint of the bottom and sides started in the aft section no longer makes sense and a butt joint becomes more viable. Generally, where the chine bottom face is faired to the point where it is equal to the side face, and it becomes apparent that a butt joint is ...

Re: 20ft Texas Barrel

Much better. I think a dark stain like the transom will make it look smaller and more proportionate, too. The unfinished light wood tends to make it appear bigger.
